Biking a mountian

My husband is hoping to bike up a mountain while we are in Austria. This is a life long dream of his. We will be in Vienna, but his open to traveling somewhere within a few hours train ride to do this. He will need to rent a bike (hopefully road bike). Does anyone know a company to rent from and a route to use? He is ok with biking up to 50 miles.

Thanks for any advice.

There are a lot of high pass roads in the Austrian Alps to chosse from...

The distance is not the issue here, as tehre will always be some train or bus station enar enough to start the biking route from. The elevation is the issue. How much elevation gain does he want to make?

Try pedalpower- they speak english - rent various types of bikes and can offer tips to you.

The mountain areas by Semmering may offer some things - this easily reached by train and bike is easily transported with you.

The area of the Danube valley Wachau offers some nice biking along the danube River with the oportunizty to climb up the area by Aggstein Castle for a great view of the Danube.

I think the crucial point of OP is %26quot;up a mountain%26quot;, not a Wachau biking trip.

There is a very good overview of mountain pass roads in the Alps at www.quaeldich.de, however mostly in German.

If Bet1550%26#39;s husband is fit enough, I would recommend the most spectacular route in Austria, the Großglockner Road. However it is not within day trip from Vienna - you would need to stay at least once overnight in Zell am See, or Fuschl (better since directly at the base of the Großglockner road). However it%26#39;s 1600 m elevation from Fuschl to Edelweißspitze, so not for everyone.

Wachau /Danube area is a reasonable distance from Vienna and also offers varios terrain including up to Maria Taferl and Aggstein among others . This offered as an alternative.

The area of the Grossglockner is a 4 1/2 - 5 hour train ride 1 way with transfers.

Also above poster confuses the recommended town of Fuschl - this is on Lake Fuschl and not even close to the Grossglockner. The correct town name is Fusch or also known as Fusch /Grossglockner.

Semmering is about the most convenient for a day as recommended above in my opinion.

Sorry, it%26#39;s Fusch, you are right.

Thank you all so much for your advise. My husband is looking into all suggestions as we speak.

My husband is a decent age group triathlete who would like to put in a serious climb (Tour or Giro worthy) while in Europe. He only has an open day during a conference in Vienna, so it would have to be a day trip, although it is ok if it is most of his day. He was looking for a good route, he has been told that cyclists have less to worry on such passes with motorists, but wanted to verify with others that the route is good. Thanks again in advance for the help!

Car drivers are mostly OK, it%26#39;s the motorbikers you have to worry about.
