Hi,
I am planning a day trip to Salzburg from Munich this Satruday on Bayern ticket of Euro 20. I will be catching the early morning train to Salzburg. Well, since this is the first time me going to Salzburg and I have only 1 day to spend there, I need a suggestion from u guys on the top must see places in Salzburg within a day. And, is all the places can be reached by foot or should I take any public transportation. I also heard something rgdg salzburg card which can be used for 24 hrs. What is that? Do i need one to travel around Salzburg? Since I am going alone, I would like to try my level best to explore the city by myself without engaging any tour guide. Is that sounds better? Kindly advise.
Thank u

Hello Malar,
Salzburg is a tiny city so you%26#39;ll easily be able to see the main tourist attractions. They are within walking distance of each other. If you%26#39;re arriving by train from Munchen go outside to the bus station and ask for a bus going to Zentrum (Hanuschplatz). Getting off the bus you%26#39;ll be in the old city and you can just cross the road and wend your way through alleys and streets within the old town. Getreidegasse is within a 30 second walk from the bus. Here you%26#39;ll find Mozart%26#39;s birthplace. The cathedral, St Peter%26#39;s cemetery, the squares, fountains and the fortress are all within a short walk. Buy a city map or just ask directions. You%26#39;ll find it very easy.
The fortress is a must-see as there are wonderful views from both the north and south battlements. Salzburg is full of great places to eat. Close to the funicular railway that takes you up to the fortress is Stieglkeller. Lots of huge rooms to eat in and if the weather is still good you can go out onto the terrace which has views over the city rooftops.
Mirabelgarten and Mozart%26#39;s wohnhaus are back across the river, again in walking distance. Maybe you could could visit those on your way back to the train.
The No.25 bus takes you to Schloss Hellbrunn. The palace is small but the Italian gardens with their trick fountains are interesting. The bus takes less than thirty minutes to get there. The same bus takes you to the Untersberg mountain where you can take the cable car to the top. This might eat into your time too much, though.
The Salzburg card gives you free entrance to all the tourist sights including the fortress. It soon pays for itself if you%26#39;re going to do a lot of tourist attractions. It also gives you free transport on city buses but you really won%26#39;t be using them that much if you just stay in the old town. Here is a website giving details of the Salzburg card. I think you could buy one at the train station as you arrive.

Hope some of this is useful.

Here%26#39;s what I did in one day using a 24-hour Salzburg card:http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g190441-i391-k2998144-Report_Touring_Salzburg_with_a_24_hour_Salzburg_Card-Salzburg_Austrian_Alps.html
Check that Hellbrunn%26#39;s fountains are working when you will be there. It was the highlight of my day.
Unless you are tired and just want a rest, I%26#39;d skip the boat cruise and either go to the Cathredral (Dom) or Mozart%26#39;s Residence.
Have a great day! Salzburg is truly a unique city.
