We are family of 3. 2 adults and our 8 year old daughter. We are planning a 5 to 6 day trip to Austria in May 2010. We will be having a rental car. We will be coming in from Munich side. We really like good drives, nature/scenery, small villages, mountains, lakes, etc. Not really in to music (Mozart, etc) or deep in to museums. We would typically stay in a city and go out walking/driving on day trips. We would greatly appreciate suggestions for itenary.

I would suggest that you begin your planning with a review of the following site.
www.salzkammergut.at
this beutiful area is just outside of the city of Salzburg. It offers good info on opportunities of this area.
It will offer many choices of villages with good and reasonable accomodations that can be used to explore the region.
It offers much to fill your desires of nature, scenery, small villages, mountains, lakes, etc.
Salzburg city is easily reached by auto and probably takes one of your days for sightseein.
I advise stying in the country versus city as it is just not only cheaper but probaby closer to those things you desire.
Places like St. Gilgen, Bad Ischl, Strobl offer good opportunities.
Hopefully the Glossglockner Alpine road will be open and offers a fine day of sightseeing too.
