we%26#39;ve been looking at car hire in Austria but the deposit taken from the companies is crippling, most are looking for 500 euro. I know that you get it back but does anyone know of any company that doesnt take so much from your card?
many thanks

They don%26#39;t actually take the money from your card. It%26#39;s literally a surety to let them see you have that amount of money on the card in case you scarper with their vehicle :-)They would only take it then.
I recommend Avis at Salzburg airport. If you book at Avis.com you can pay when you return the car. Avis.co.uk is more expensive. We have rented from Avis in Salzburg fifteen times and have always had excellent service from them.
If you are flying Ryanair from Stansted you could take a look at their website. I think they have a deal with Hertz and the prices compare with Avis.
Picking up your hire car at Salzburg airport could not be easier. You walk from the arrivals hall across the road straight into the hire car office. The details are dealt with quickly, they give you the key, you go down into the lift in the car park and away you go. We%26#39;ll be hiring from Avis again in December.

Cheers for your reply and advice. Our issue is that our credit card doesn%26#39;t have a huge limit therefore we literally don%26#39;t have the funds required that can be taken as a deposit..

I always use HolidayAutos, who are brilliant. You should take out the extra insurance for about £35 for peace of mind, as that covers you for nearly everything.
You will also find that the car hire price is coinsiderably cheaper than booking direct with the companies themselves. HA use most of the major ones there, but it depends upon what car you want.

In my experience, car hire companys charge between 400-800 euros for a deposits, it is blacked on your card and you will get it back when you return the car. This is no use to you if you do not have a card with a large limit unfortunatly as these places do not take cashs as a deposit.
I would recommend that you take the train from Salzburg to Vienna, it is very scendic and also reasonable and fast and comfotable. I hope this helps and enjoy your visits to our beutiful country.

I%26#39;ve only been charged %26quot;pre-authorised%26quot; the amount of the hire car plus a tank of fuel.
Never had a %26quot;deposit%26quot; put on top of that.
When you return the car everything is then fully settled.
If you prepay I don%26#39;t recall that you need to leave a deposit. They have your CC details already.
Couldn%26#39;t agree more that Salzburg airport is very easy for ar rental. Being a small airport all the firms are on sight just across the road.
As it%26#39;s a small airport and therefore has a limited amount of cars, always book the cheapest one and you%26#39;re almost certain to get an upgrade.
I%26#39;ve NEVER ended up with a group A car although I book one every time I go.
Hertz has good rates but I do find Avis is always the cheapest. Go to flyertalk.com and get some discount codes ;)

I have often got the cheapest rates with www.autoeurope.com . To my experience, their quotes for Salzburg airport varied strongly dependent on the collection and/or return times.
Avis is also good.

I would advise anyone thinking of using auto europe for car hire to check out the reviews on reviewcentre.com first.
