Hi,
I am planning to take the Transalpin train from Basel to Vienna on Christmas Day. I believe it runs, although the timetables aren%26#39;t out yet. I also wondered if anyone had ever eaten in the restaurant car? We are both vegetarian I don%26#39;t know if that is a problem?
cheers

At this season, the Transalpin has a swiss restaurant coach. Not cheap but in my experience good dishes and good service.
There will be different vegeterian meals, don%26#39;t worry.

Thanks for your help Robbi

Austrian (and Central European) cuisine is basically meaty but times have changed. Nowadays you always find a vegetarian meal on the menu beside numerous meatless side dishes. So it won%26#39;t be a problem to get something edible.

That%26#39;s the menu from the austrian restaurant coach... just to give you an example:
e-express.at/cms/…unser_aktuelles_angebot.pdf
Buy enough drinks before you board the train for this long journey as drinks onboard are quite expensive compared to supermarkets.

Also pay in euros if you can, rather than Swiss Francs, as according to that menu it is quite a bit cheaper that way!

Great advise - thanks. I really enjoyed reading the menu PDF.
Another question - Where is the best place to buy my ticket. I%26#39;d really like to get a good price on an advance ticket if I can. Should I use OBB internet site and book online. I checked SBB and it%26#39;d didn%26#39;t show any special offer prices.
cheers

You can book on both sites:
Swiss Railways SBB/CFF/FFS http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm
Austrian Railways ÖBB
http://www.oebb.at/pv/en/index.jsp
Check the fares on both websites as sometimes offers are available only in one country and sold out in the other country.
