For some reason this trip seemed really confusing to us before we left, but when we actually did it, it came together beautifully, so I thought I%26#39;d try to clear up some of the confusion.
We took the train to Melk around 10:30 am (easy, straightforward, takes about an hour.) From there, you tour the Abbey and catch the boat to Durstein...fabulous trip and incredible town when you get there. There is a wonderufl restaurant in a hotel which sits on a cliff overlooking the river...very romantic and beautiful. We had about 2 hous to spend in Durstein before the boat came back...very easy to pass the time, but we tried to walk to the next village (which we%26#39;d seen described here as 1 km through the vineyards) and it was actually 3 km...too far for us in that timeframe. We took the boat to Krems and then had to make a decision. We either had about 2 minutes or an hour and 20 minutes in Krems. Since it was more of a large town and the shops were closed by that time (sixish) we decided to hurry through and take the train back to Vienna...arrived home about 7:30pm.
This day was a highlight of our trip...I highly recommend it...don%26#39;t be intimidated by the confusion of information...when you get there it%26#39;s easy. One thing which we didn%26#39;t realize till the last minute...Melk is the farthest destination from Vienna with Durstein a little closer and Krems the closest.
BTW, we LOVED Vienna...

Thanks for your little trip report but what exactly do you mean if you speak about %26quot;confusion%26quot;?

I think that before we left we thought we were taking a boat up the Danube from Vienna and a train home. Also, we didn%26#39;t realize that Melk was the farthest destination and Krems closest. It just seemed long distance that there were a lot of people saying slightly different things, and that%26#39;s why I wanted to share our exerience and how easy it is to get around in the area. That also was a surprise to us...in a foreign country you don%26#39;t know what to expect in advance about the relative difficulty of using public transportation systems; Vienna was very easy...fabulous city...we will return.
