Can anyone recommend a route from Salzburg to Vienna, we%26#39;re going to drive and would like a scenic route with somewhere nice to go for lunch so any advice would be welcome.
Is the area mountainous or flat? Rivers etc?
Many thanks

One route
leave Salzburg finding route # 158 in the direction of Hof, Fuschl towrd the Lake region. This way passes nice villages and scenery- Lakes Fuschl , Wolfgangsee and the adjacent towns, Mountains too but not extra high or requiring dangerous driving.
One nice town is Bad Isch , the formerly summer and hunting area of Emperor Franz Joseph. from there you travel towards Ebensee and Gmunden on # 145.
Just outside and north of Gmunden you will connect with the A-1 Autobahn taking you toward Vienna.
About one hour drive before Vienna , you will find melk Abbey . This is well worth a visit and is just 5 minutes or less after exiting the autobahn.
From Melk you have a choice to return to the autobahn and then toward Vienna . Or better taking the # 3 roadway just across the danube from melk . This picturesque roadway finds it way just nest to the Danube , passing orchards, vineyards, nice villages to the town of krems. There this road becomes # 5 and leads to the A- 22 and then Vienna.
Driving times
Krems - Vienna- 1 hour
Melk - Krems 30 - 45 minutes
Gmunden - Melk 2 hours ?
For dining depends on your timings and probably for sure you stop to see things along the way.
In the town of Gmunden just on the lake some nice places.
Most any gasthof along the way other than the massive stops on the autobahn.
Depending on the season- Melk Abbey has an OK restaurant.
Some quality places along the Danube- again depending on day and season
Jamek in Joching.
Heinzle in Weissenkirchen
Loibnerhof in Loiben
the above all immediately adjacent to the highway.
This makes a nice day trip and varied interesting sites.
