Hi everyone. We are going to spent our winter holidays (from 31.dec.2009 to 08.Jan.2010) somewhere in Austrian Alps. There will be 6 or 7 of us, still young =)
We are looking at Ischgl and St.Anton but it seems that besides financial crisis everything is booked there for our dates. ;) So right now we have not yet decided the exact place to go. I would appreciate any recommendations or past experience of yours.
Last year we have visited Obertauern (following recommendations here) and we delighted with skiing, atmosphere and apres ski. May be someone knows a place in Austria like Obertauern, Ischgl or St.Anton (with the ski lifts inside the town and preferably in Tirol area) which is worth visiting and where it might be easier to book some accommodations now. All advices are welcomed!
Thanks to everyone!

You look to book in 2 of the most popular ski resorts in the busiest season of the year.
many places are reluctant to book at this time for periods less than the full holiday period - this december 24 - january 6.
They do not wish to split up this booking period afraid they will not have a client for the other days - in your case December 24- 31.
When it gets closer to this time their reluctance fades and they often split the time .
Thus you can wait and hope- not a great thing in my opinion.
Have you contcted the resorts tourist offices -they can often assist you.
Also check the villages nearby like pettnau for St. Anton.
Have you considered an apartment or chalet ? this may be a good alternative for these resorts
Lech , Oberlech and Zurs are also premier resorts in this area but you probably have a similar problem.
Not far from Obertauern is Schladming- great ski circus , some nightlife too- excelent skiing - home to a World Cup race and future championships too.
Try there
Good Luck !

Yeah I do understand that almost nobody will split the week-periods. However we are quite mobile and I assume that for a couple of days we can stay in a hotel (I hope that they do split =) and for the remainder period will try to find some chalet/apartment. However we have not succeeded yet with the places I%26#39;ve mentioned.
I%26#39;ve heard that by the autumn some bookings may be canceled and, as you say, the places will probably accept any type of bookings. However I do not think this to be a great idea too. However I will bear this in mind as a last chance ;)
Thanks for advising other resorts. Which of them you think I should try first (I mean in terms of skiing/nightlife, etc.)
PS: It seems to me that it was you who recommended us Obertauern last year. I would like just to thank you, it worked as perfect as it can be!

I have just read about Lech. Do you think that it would be suitable for us? Our main aim is not to find a premier resort but to have a good time and fun irrespective of the status of the resort.

Fantastic skiing in Lech - expensive and limited nightlife if this is important. You probably have the same trouble with bookings. many reserve here for the next year holiday seson as they depart from their stay.
Much more quiet than Obertauern.
For schladming
www.schladming.at
www.schladming-dachstein.at
a quick check shows numerous places available for your dates.
good apreski and many mountain huts.
Also good is Saalbach- Hinterglemm
good nightlife and a extensive ski circus of lifts-

Skiied Schladming skiing excellent but nightlife poor

Thanks to everyone%26#39;s comments. I have finally found the pension in Saalbach which was free for our specific dates and agreed to book for the specified period only.
Much thanks again.
|||
Great that you found somethin to fit your needs.
Enjoy your visit and hope good snow conditions.
|||
saalbach and hinterglemm are to different towns within about 2km distance between them. ski area is linked with 200km+ of runs. hinterglemm is more of a big village than a town. if your looking for nightlife then i%26#39;d choose saalbach or if you want it quietish then i%26#39;d choose hinterglemm. whichever you choose the skiing is linked. went there in jan 09 and hoping to go back january 2010. enjoy the vast amounts of snow. lol.

Thanks, we will be staying in Saalbach hope it will be nice holidays =)
