Recommended hotels - Vienna at Christmas

Hi,

Can anyone help?

We are planning to visit Vienna for a Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. I%26#39;m not sure what is a good area to stay we want somewhere handy(ish) for the centre and not too far from the train stations. We hope to come by the transalpin train from switzerland, so will arrive at Westbahnhof and possibly leave from the Sudbahnhof. We are looking for a nice, well priced hotel and wondered if we might get a discounted business hotel if they aren%26#39;t in difficult positions.

Cheers

This is a regular question for which there is no one reply!

In order to recommend a hotel it%26#39;s necessary to know your price range and whether that has to include breakfast. What ambiance of hotel do you want? How many rooms and how many per room? Are there any must-have facilities you need?

Hotels near the centre tend to cost more, but with Vienna%26#39;s great transport links (yes, even over Christmas) it need not be a problem.

Use the search criteria on TA to find some possibles for you dates and preferred price and do the same on the hotel search tab of the Vienna Tourist Board%26#39;s site (Search %26amp; Book on the right hand side):

We stayed at the Vienna Marriott last December and found it to be a well located business hotel very near the Pedestrian area, on the tram line, and2 blocks from the underground.

I found a last minute rate on Otel.com that included breakfast for about 130E per night for a room with king bed.

Staff was excellent and hotel more charming than the standard business hotel.

Everyone has a different idea of what is good in a hotel.

In my opinion the Marriott is not the best choice for price ,onvenient location, and access to train stations for your purposes.

This is a typical chain hotel with the usual functional room without style or character.

As mentioned above - hard to advise without price guidelines but I offer the following .

The most convenient location for sightseeing , etc. is the city center - First District. This easy to identify by its postal code of 1010 that you will find on hotel address in that area.

While the marriott is within this district is on at the edge with most major sights to the other side of this district.

Some other hotels much better located

Medium price

Pension Suzanne

Hotel Austria

Pension Pertschy

Higher pricing

Steigenberger Herrenhof

Hollmann Beletage

Konig von Ungarn

Kaiserin Elisabeth

The Konig and kaiserin offer vienna style accomadations and are very convenient to the U-3

The Steigenbrger , a newer hotel but just a few meters from the U-3 station Herrengasse and most convenient to restaurants, sightseeing etc.

Hollman a smaller boutique hotel still well located

With the excelent city transport system available to you - consider staying immediately adjacent to the Westbahnhof.

Numerous and varied hotels are in this vicinity within quick walking distance.

Some include

Mercure Wien Westbahnhof

Hotel Ibis mariahilf

Europlatz

www.accorhotels.com

Directly at the Westbahnhof , you will find the UBahn U-3 with a 10 minute ride into the very city center for sights etc.

You should know that the Sudbahnhof is in the midst of a new building project.

Supposedly , it is to close sometime in December.

If this does not occur. You can make a connection from the westbahnhof area directly to the Sudbahnhof by streetcar found just outside of the Westbahnhof.

If it has closed trains will be found at the Meidling station. This easily reached directly by using the UBahn U-6.

Thus this Westbahnhof area is very convenient for you.

You will find info and reviews here on TA.

Look carefully at the reviews as some can be less than candid.

Also the rating system is very inaccurate in my opinion, a popularity contest easily manipulated

Thanks for all the great advice.

The stuff about the Sudbahnhof building works is very helpful indeed. I have got lots of possibilities to look at and think I will look around Westbahnhof and the centre.

I absolutely agree with the TA points system, it%26#39;s all about the latest entries and visitor numbers. So some good hotels can get pushed way down the list rather unfairly.

|||

I fully understand Vertical%26#39;s oft stated view that the rankings on TA should not be relied on. It%26#39;s quite possible for unscrupulous people to skew the results up and down with a few false positive or negative reviews. However most of the hotels we regularly recommend do find their way into the top part of the ratings charts. I look at the reviews when choosing a hotel, but I always click on the link to the reviewer. If they%26#39;ve only ever made one TA contribution I view them with great suspicion especially if their review is heavily praiseworthy or critical. But if they%26#39;ve reviewed several hotels in varied cities I consider them well travelled and almost certainly genuine and I therefore put much more trust in their views.

Must add to The good comments of Norman-

I have referred before to a certain very small establishment in a small resort village.

It has been #1 on the austrian hotel list and mostly always in the top 10.

Mysteriously, the largest portion of the reviews are made by one and only time posters- never returning to TA again.

This place has more than 2 times the reviews of the remaining hotels in this village combined and that seems very strange as well.

Yet, this situation remains unchallenged. It has been reported more than once to TA without response.

Unfortunately , a new unsuspecting poster may blindly choose such a place good or bad without a good study of reviews and the individual poster- Buyer beware

We all have different priorities in hotels when we travel. For me, a fitness center is a must have as well as a business center.

While some chain hotels are indeed charmless, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

|||

Caviargal I%26#39;m surprised you even bothered to recommend any hotel at all in Vienna as you very rarely have a good word to say about the city usually preferring to disuade people from spending much, if any, time there at all!

|||

We enjoyed the Marrriott and that was what the OP asked about, not about other%26#39;s opinions of Vienna.

We stayed at the Marriott at Easter and actually found the location very good for sightseeing, some stuff walkable, otherwise tram-ride or U-Bahn (choice of lines).

Yes it lacks quaintness and isn%26#39;t in fact what we normally go for but the deal was great and we were impressed enough by the service to look at (and stay in) the Marrioott in Copenhagen this summer.

The Marriotts at the moment have very competetive pricing so worth looking at, I%26#39;d say. I did look at other hotels nearer the cathedral before deciding on this one. We were in Vienna with relatives in their mid-80%26#39;s so having public transport so handy was great.
