We will be in Vienna from November 7 to 17. I%26#39;ve researched on a day trip to Melk and looks like in November there are no boat trips available from Melk to Krems. Is there anything else to do in Melk beside the checking out Abby... or should we just come back after the Abby tour is over?
I would like to take a scenic ride either by bus or train from Vienna (durantion no more than one and half hour each way) . Is there any place anyone can recommend to me?
I checked Baden..I%26#39;m not interested in Spa thing..but does this place has a nice scenery with moutains that we can check out?
I think, I%26#39;m more looking for a scenic ride..or to go to a place which is similar to Switzerland%26#39;s Jungfrau%26#39;s Top of the world place?
We%26#39;ll be staying with my bro-in-law %26amp; his fam. and they are not that familiar with the places there yet...so I would appreciate if anyone can help me with some info! We were supposed to go to Salzburg, but cancelled it for this time as that takes away time from family we%26#39;re visiting (they won%26#39;t go to a overnight trip with us).
Thanks a bunch!

I%26#39;ll kick off with http://www.mikulov.cz/tourism/ for example - it is actually 1.5 hours by train, but you have a 30 minute wait at Břeclav. There is a train at 0958 and there are plenty of trains back in the evening. For times see www.idos.cz
It is not the Jungfrau, and it is not mountainous or even in Austria, but the surrounding area is a UNESCO protected biosphere zone (Pálava Hills …wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1lava_Landscape_Pr… ) and is also very beautiful in its own right, as is the town itself.
I believe there are some small mountains to the south of Vienna - I%26#39;ll let Mikey tell you about those as I think he posted something about them previously.

Vienna is located in a rather flat area. The Alps geographically begin Southwest of Vienna but they are still low here (and gradually grow towards the West). You can%26#39;t compare Greater Vienna with Switzerland! The fact that you have limited the travel time to 1h30min makes it even harder (or actually impossible) to suggest anything suitable. If you wanna enjoy mountainous settings I can recommend the following:
%26gt; Schneeberg Mountain accessible from %26quot;Puchberg%26quot;
%26gt; Rax Mountain reachable from %26quot;Payerbach-Reichenau%26quot;
Threads in which I have detailed the options:

noorjahan,
If I were you, I would exclude Baden, given that you%26#39;re not interested in the SPA. It%26#39;s a nice and charming place to visit and walk around in spring and summer, but definitely not in November. Besides, there are no mountains in Baden, only hills grown with forest.
If you want a nice trip, maybe you would be interested in a tour around Vienna Woods (they depart from the State Opera)? The ride is not extremely scenic mountain-wise, but it%26#39;s interesting and pleasant - you visit the former hunting house Mayerling, the monastery Heiligencreuz and the underground lake Seegrotte.
Have a nice trip!

Hello All,
Thanks for the replies with recommendations and advice. I am going to do research and see how this goes.
The trip journey duration limitation is due to the fact that my bro%26amp;sis-in law have a toddler and a brand new baby, which would I assume make any journey too cumbersome for them.
If there are any nice journey to take that could take more than 1.5 hours, please feel free to suggest, we might end up going without them (at least I%26#39;m hoping). As much as I would like to spend time with them, I wish to see some of Austria as well. I guess, they can go later- they live there!

Have you considered renting a car for the day and driving to Melk and Krems? We are doing that at the end of October since the boats will have stopped. Most times you can pick the car up at the train station. With 2 small children this might give you some added flexibility to stop if you need to. Driving in Austria is not a big deal in fact as a resident of New Jersey, I would say it is easier!

travelnj, thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, renting a car is not an opntion for us. It would have been much easier, but not able to!

The Danube ships Melk- Krems on the danube cease to run at the end of October.
You can make a day tour to Melk Abbey and the scenic Danube area including a lunch stop.
In November little to do in melk other than visit the Abbey, but this alone is worth the trip.
