Which city to choose

We are planning a weekend break in December, cant choose between Vienna, Munich or Nuremberg, we have not been to any of these, Any advice?

I have not been to Nuremberg yet but we are headed there in late November for a few days.

I have been to Vienna 3x and Munich 5x. Personally, I enjoy Munich more. I find it friendlier and costs are more reasonable. Also, in Germany restaurants are non smoking but not so in Austria unless things have changed in 9 months. I dislike cigarette smoke and I found it pervasive in winter, not so much in my summer and fall visits in the past.

Also, Munich is a great base for day trips to very pretty parts of Bavaria.

Victoria123 that is a hard question to answer as it is so personal depending on your likes and interests.

I visited Vienna in January and fell in love with it- for imperial splendor, museums, art galleries and palaces you can%26#39;t go past it out of those three.

Munich I have yet to fall in love with as I visited once when backpacking MANY years ago to go to the Octoberfest and in January for a day where it just didn%26#39;t grab me. That was probably my fault, not the cities as I was wandering around killing time waiting to go to the airport for a flight home here to Australia.

Nurenberg is on my list of cities in the world I want to revisit as I first went over 20 years ago on that backpacking trip but still have fond memories of it.

Maybe come back and post what you are wanting out of a city and maybe some others who have visited all 3 can tell you how they stack up in regards to your interests.

It is true that smoking in Vienna (and Austria) is (still) more liberally handled than elsewhere but that does not mean that every restaurant is full of smoke. Moreover this should not be the basis for a decision. I rather think of the architecture of a city, the cultural diversity and entertainment options than of a little nuisance what smoking can doubtless be.

I find Vienna and Munich to be (almost) equal in terms of general attractiveness, although Vienna is more lively in my opinion. Nuremberg could easily be visited from Munich if you desire. Vienna is famous for its Christmas Markets which can be found throughout the city.

While smoking might not be a deal breaker for everyone, it is certainly a consideration for those with allergies to smoke or for those who find it loathesome to eat while people are smoking next to them. Certainly it is worth mentioning IMO.

We are careful to only book restaurants that offer non smoking sections when in Austria. Most other countries we visit in Europe have gone non smoking.
