Winter Driviing Advise.......

My family and I will be spending Christmas in Vienna this year and would like to visit Salzburg and Hallstad after December 26. We are thinking on driving to this 2 towns but would like some advise on doing it.

Are the roads safe this time of year regarding ice/snow?. We then plan to drive to Prague for New year%26#39;s and return our rental there before flying back home.

Any advise or comment on previous experiences is greatly appreciated.......

Yes, they are safe at long as it does not snow all day long. If that is the case, try to travel the next day or later... and just drive how the other people do... slower.

Usually roads are free of snow... especially as you plan to drive on main roads.

One thing: returning an austrian car in the czech republic will cause a huge drop-off fee!

Normally this time of year, you should find little problem driving on Austrian roadways.

The lake district of Salzburg is relatively low altitude and with the lakes moderating temperatures , limited amounts of snow would normally be found.

The road crews quickly remove any snow as these roads are well traveled.

As mentioned above , the drop off fees renting in Austria and dropping off in Czech can be very high.

Czech roads in these areas can be relatively conjested with truck traffic slowing travel. many roadways you would find to be two lanes making passing often dangerous.

Perhaps you wish to rent in salzburg for sightseeing outside of the city, returning the auto there and then taking the train to Praque- less stress and trouble.

Thank you very much to all!! This will help us a whole lot. I will follow your advise and travel to Prague by train to avoid the trouble and the fees.

Do we have to go back to Vienna to take the train to Prague or can we just take it in Salzburg?

|||

You can get the train from Salzburg to Prague and you can buy a ticket on-line from €19 however it is not possible now as the timetables are not out yet oebb.at/pv/…index.jsp

Of course you can also buy the ticket on the day, but it will cost a bit more as the number of special offer tickets is limited.

It would still be cheaper than the several hundred Euro dropping off fee!

And if the only direct train does not fit in your timeframe, just use another connection with changing trains.

No need to buy the ticket for these trains in advance, you can buy them just before you go.

Taking the train between Salzburg and Prague is a good option... less hassle, cheaper and comfortable.

You can find the timetable (at the moment only until 12 Dec., the new timetable will be online in the next weeks) at the link provided by GCEK.

I can not thank you enough for all these tips!!. This will make my holiday planning so much easier.....

Got to love you and Trip Adviser!
