Best district to live in?

Hi there!!

I am moving to Vienna at short notice at the end of the month. We are looking to rent an apartment (up to €1300 per month) and would like to know what the different districts are like. My husband will be working in the 1st district but does not mind a public transport commute up to 20mins. I won%26#39;t be working so where we live is really important.

We are a young-ish professional couple. We would like to live in a district with a good atmosphere, quite upmarket, good vibe, bustling streets, nice boutique shops / restaurants/ markets etc. I don%26#39;t want to live anywhere I will feel isolated or in a depressing lifeless place. I am not a fan of suburbs either!

If anyone has any ideas I would be hugely appreciative!

Thanks in advance!

As always, there is never one thing (or district) that is so perfect matching all of your requirements.

Moreover, it would take too much time to describe all 23 districts in Vienna. Your requirements limit the choice to the districts 1 to 9 which are all centrally situated. All the mentioned districts (except the 1st district) have their ups and downs. For example, the 2nd (Leopoldstadt) features a few very fancy neigborhoods, but also appalling ones. Hence, you will have to explore the area you wanna live in in order to say whether it is good or not. As you are willing to pay 1300€/month, you won%26#39;t encounter problems finding a good place.

The First district is the premier dwelling distirct.

It most directly fits your listed requirements.

Great choices of shopping, dining, also culture opportunities - best of all this all within walking distance.

Probably next desirable is the 9th District some very nice small streets- perhaps a little more quiet than the First and not as many opportunities - some good smal restaurnats. Rental prices a littles.

Next is the 19th - a little further out of the center - 20- 30 minutes but good transport connections. Seems especially liked by families as near to the woods and quiet spaces.

some good dining less shopping - generally those residing here gravitate to the First for culture , shopping .

you can get some idea of rental rates - type of places- look to a major real estate firm like Remax - they will list many places in the above districts some with photos.

can provide names of numerous smaller firms if you wish.

try out the 04-09th District

be aware about the different renting system here

so you pay normal the rent incl.your part the house running house

normally Heating, Electricity, TV fee (GIS) is excluded

you also pay normally a commission fee (amount = 2-3 monthly rent) if you get the flat from an estate agent

and you need to pay also 3 months rents as caution which will you get back if the flat is in good condition

Hi guys.. Just to say thanks for you help! I%26#39;ve found some good websites which describe the different areas. I will collate all the info and head to Vienna in a couple of weeks time to start the daunting search.

Thanks again!

another point compared to Glasgow (where I lived some time) if is says 2 rooms it means two rooms (no matter it´s function) and not 2 bed rooms.

So a 2 1/2 room flat means 1 living room, 1 large bed room and a small bed room. You have the suare meters + the room numbers as hint eg 72m2 and 2 rooms (only one bed room)

Most flats comes unfurnished , sometimes it says partly furnished. So check out what you want/need

If it says unfurnished there isn´t really any furniture at all and normally no build in cupboards are available or En Suite Masterbed rooms.

here some pages for rents

Newspaper: German

Here is one Real Estate Agent so you can have look more throughly to compare

Hi there,

Would love to hear about your search....we are in the process of planning a move to Vienna...will be there in June sometime. What websites did you find for rentals? Any info would be helpful. All the best

|||

hiya, the websites suggested here are good but I have also being using various links found through http://www.virtualvienna.net/. it is a community website (not for profit or anything like that) and has lots of interesting forums.

Are you moving independently or with your work? I ask as without employer support getting accomodation in Vienna can be hard in that you need to provide massive deposits (3-6 months), pay commission (usually 3 months depending on the length of the contract)... although our employer is covering the deposit we will have to pay the commission so we are waiting til we get there next week to view private rentals that some colleagues are searching out for us. All a bit of a headache but I am more than happy to keep in contact in case you need a hand with anything or have any questions (tho I can%26#39;t promise I%26#39;ll know the answers at this stage!)

thanks for the reply. still unsure about all the details, but would be moving there through work and i would imagine they would offer alot of assistance to their employees. will know more in the coming months. but keep me posted as to how you get on. all the best.

I am also moving to vienna and trying to find a district that is a little more lively. I have a relocation company that will be looking for an apartment in my price range (800-1000/month) and in an area that has bars, cafes, shops.... I have been told districts 7, 6, 5 are all great places to live. The commute to the outer districts is relatively short. I am looking for an apartment now but wont be moving until July 1st. Keep in touch if you get any good information.
