Hello,

I have only been to the Salzburg Christmas markets so it%26#39;s impossible for me to compare it with the other two you mention. Salzburg is a small, compact city so all the tourist attractions are very close together. There are two main markets which run into each other - one in Residenzplatz beside the cathedral and the second in Domplatz in front of the cathedral. There are other smaller markets at Schloss Hellbrunn, within the grounds of the fortress and at Schloss Mirabel. Salzburg is set in a beautiful landscape with mountain views. The fortress on the hill is a great place to visit with stunning views of the Alps. If scenery is a priority then I would say Salzburg wins hands down.

I have taken my mom twice to Germany and Austria for the Christmas markets. Salzburg is her absolute place in this area and she always talks about her two wonderful trips there. It was also a small city and she felt comfortable enough venturing out on her own there, something she did not do in Munich.

From Salzburg last year, we took the bus to St. Gilgen then the ferry to St. Wolfgang - a storybook day. We also went to Hellbrunn for the market there, to the Fortress and had a wonderful week spent between day trips and Salzburg itself.

Munich has lots of markets and is a big city so the ambiance is quite different. I am a big fan of Munich as well but Salzburg is where I would choose.
