Wine Question

Going to be in Vienna in late November and want to try some good local wine. I like Pinot Noir, Chardonney , Reisling and Sparkling wines best, but will try anything that is not too heavy/oaky.

What is the best local/regional wines and how much can I expect to pay per bottle in a resturant/bar or in a super market ?

Thanks!

There are excellent white wines from the Wachau region, Riesling and in particular the dry Gruener Veltliner. Don%26#39;t miss the %26quot;Wine %26amp; Co%26quot; stores where you can taste at the bar and they have really good prices and a wide selection of excellent local and international wines.

I bcome tired of posting longer recommendations here and having them somehow lost by Trip Advisor. it seems they can not allow good time to make such contributions .

I try quickly again.

More than 20000 wineries in Austria , ao your selection takes a lifetime to taste.

best known are the white wines

Gruner Veltliner

Riesling

Neuburger

These are generally ,light, fresh ,fruity , some times a hint of pepper in some but rare.

Of course all depends on the winery and location of the grape vineyard.

You will finda little chardonney too but much less than the above.

The Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal just west of Vienna and bnear the danube are perhaps the best areas.

Wineries such as Brundlmayer, Prager, Ott, Jamek, Ehn, Pichler, and many others.

Often many good wineries are overlooked and do not just judge by price.

Sparkling wines - Sekt

some good ones available especially from Gruner Veltliner

and zweigelt rose.

many 8-12 euro .

Red wines

especially from the area sotheast of Vienna, Carnuntum, Gols,

Burgenland.

No need to buy a bottle in a restaurant. You can drink a 1/8 or 1/4 glass- a good way to sample wine - less costly to find if you enjoy this and this is often done.

For some good explanations of various wines look to this site

www.brundlmayer.com

After a scandal many years ago, strict controls over wine were enacted.

You will see the %26quot; Qualitatsweine %26quot; on most bottles to insur that that proper testing and quality is inside.

For an enjoyable evening perhaps you wish to visit a Heuriger- a vienna wine tavern.

just enter this name in the search box for information.

Kelly, I think most of our time in Vienna will be spent in wine bars!

Sadly, we will not be able to get out of the city to visit the many wineries since we will only be in Vienna for about 36 hrs. But we will make sure to sample as many wines as we can!
