we have a full day to travel from vienna to prague. we would like to see the countryside and any interesting sites or towns along the way. we are considering hiring a driver or taking a bus tour. we are not interested in renting and driving our own car. Does anyone have any ideas? does anyone have a driver or tour company to recommend for this excursion.

If your pockets are deep then there is probably a driver service that will cater for all your requirements! One day is unfortunately not really enough to see all of the places en route, but these are some places that you should not miss: Mikulov and Brno if you go one way, or Znojmo and Telč if you go the other way, but for the amount a private driver would charge you would expect him/her to know absolutely everything!
There is this one http://www.prague-drivers.cz/?sp=2 - to just drive directly without any stops it is $400, or there are various other routes which will take longer and start from $350, but charge $30/hour waiting time when you go and see the places that you pass through.
In contrast the train costs from €29 ($42)

thank you for your quick reply.
i think we will opt for the train, cost wise it makes more sense, of course.
do you know if we can stop on the train trip to visit any of the sites that you mention? if so, which do you suggest knowing it will be december and sooo cold. i greatly appreciate your input. thank you.

You could stop off in Brno, but it would incur an extra expense as the discounted €29 ticket does not allow the journey to be broken. Vienna to Brno is about €28 using the above link, OR you could buy a ticket from Vienna to Břeclav on the day and then from Břeclav to Brno here https://eshop.cd.cz/search.aspx?lang=E (just print it out - make sure you choose the %26#39;group%26#39; option) which should work out slightly cheaper, then from Brno to Prague just buy a ticket at the station later in the day. There is no need to reserve.
Saying that , as it will be December, and therefore cold, it might be better to stay on the warm train all the way through :)
NB you will not be able to make any of these bookings for dates after 12th December yet as the timetables are not out yet - give it a few more weeks.
Here%26#39;s something about Brno http://www.brno.cz/index.php?lan=en or have a look on Google Earth.
Hope this helps!

I am planning the same trip and I discovered in expedia.com that there are day trips to/from Vienna and Prague. It is not to expensive about 150.00 and you can purchase and or check if it can be reserved before you go. In expedia.com I checked the hotel plus flight option and if you continue as if you are booking or to put your itnerary on hold you will later come to the option of adding tours and other ideas for your trip. Good Luck!

I just checked flights in December on Expedia - sure it is possible but you would need to be at the airport at 05.30 and costs about $1200 return for the %26#39;pleasure%26#39; :) (not including costs of transfers, etc)

Thank you for your input. i am trying to access the site you mentioned. but it is saying that it does not run from vienna to prague. it says you must travel from prague to vienna and not vice versa. am I reading this correctly?
if so, do you know the train that goes from vienna to prague?
|||
i have tried expedia.com. the only flights i found were $592 per person. how did you find it for so cheap?

Which site is that? If it is this one https://eshop.cd.cz/search.aspx?lang=E then no, you can%26#39;t buy them from Vienna to Prague here - just the other way around, and for tickets within the Czech Republic.
Otherwise there are several direct trains from Vienna to Prague see www.idos.cz (English button bottom right) for an overview, or you can book the discounted fares online here oebb.at/pv/…index.jsp NB you will not be able to find any information on trains past the 12th December 2009 as the timetable isn%26#39;t out yet - give it a few more days.
