I%26#39;m planning to visit Vienna between Christmas and New year%26#39;s day (maybe 2-3 days) -- have been once two years ago just for one day. I%26#39;m coming back to Dresden. A few questions..
1. Staying 3 nights in Vienna would be enough?
2. If I stop by one more city on my way to home (Dresden), what would be the best choice? (except Munique, Prague and Salzburg where I have already been) -- I was thinking of Innsbruck, but not sure if it%26#39;s worth. Being cold is okay, but I want less wet weather. (also no skiing)
3. One more thing. Is rain often in Vienna at this time of year?
Thanks.

Vienna is a large city and rich on history - 3 days/nights would be sufficient. The weather in Vienna is hard to predict. Snowfall is not a rare occurrence in Vienna although the loads have gradually decreased in the recent decades. If it is too warm, then it rains, but you cannot say that a %26quot;typical%26quot; Viennese winter is dominated by rain. Prepare for temperature between -10°C and +5°C and expect any kind of moisture/precipitation.
Innsbruck is a nice little city surrounded by mightly mountains but cannot be considered as %26quot;on the way from Vienna to Dresden%26quot;. I would rather focus on cities being more in the North such as Linz, Regensburg or Nürnberg. You could also contemplate traveling to Krakow first before heading to Dresden.

Or more directly on the way from Dresden to Vienna is Brno, the finest city in the Czech Republic - http://www.brno.cz/index.php?lan=en at least it is on the same train line to Vienna, and doesn%26#39;t involve massive diversions to see the other places that have been suggested :)
If you wish to stop off there, it costs €9 to Vienna https:/… if you want to book in advance on a particular train, or €28 on the day.

Brno is great, but if you want something really Czech + low prices %26amp; on the main Vindobona train route, try ceska trebova cz

We are all assuming you are going by train; if not, let us know.
Other towns on Vindobona train route: Pardubice.

I would recommend Ceska Trebova.

If you go to Pardubice, then take the short journey to Litomyšl, which has one of the country%26#39;s most beautiful castles (UNESCO world heritage site), and is a very nice little town as well www.litomysl.cz/php/index/index.php… http://www.zamky-hrady.cz/1/litomysl-e.htm

Thank you very much for all your inforrmation. Yes, I%26#39;m taking a train. Wow.. There%26#39;re many cities to stop by in Czech between Wien and Dresden. I%26#39;ll check through all those websites and come up with the best plan for me.
Just curious, though.. Are restaurants open on Christmas day? I have neve been out of town on Christmas day. I%26#39;m traveling by myself. So, I think maybe I feel or look lonely if I eat alone at the restaurant on Christmas day. (maybe some stupid thought)

Where are you planning to be on Christmas Day?
|||
Czechs celebrate Xmas Eve a lot more than Xmas Day; I was in Liberec (Northern Part) last year and most restaurants were open. Decide where you will stay, then check restaurants or post it here; we%26#39;ll figure it out...

... and it is the same in Austria
