UniWorld Grand European Discovery River Cruise

We are thinking about taking the UniWorld Grand European Discovery that departs the last of April 2010. Has anyone been on the 2009 cruise? The river cruise departs Vienna and stops in Basel, Switzerland. Given this, which side of the boat should be try to get a cabin on?

Travel protection...Should we purchase travel protection thru UniWorld since we will be traveling outside the U.S.?

Hi cupptravel,

It looks like RescueTeam and I encountered your post at about the same time. Please do take Rescue%26#39;s advice and check out our partner site, cruisecritic.com. In the meantime, I have moved your topic here to the Vienna forums where your trip will begin in hopes that another members who departed for the river cruise at the same place might offer you some advice.

Good luck with your research!

We just returned from the Vienna to Nuremburg portion of that trip. It was fantastic even thought the river level was low. We had a cabin on the right side and some of the times it faced the river. Other times, another ship parked next to us. It is not a big deal, as you are not in the cabin very often. You will thoroughly enjoy the Uniworld experience. The crew, service and food were outstanding.

Enjoy your cruise!

As mentioned above - the side of the boat choice is not really importsnt as bettersights will vary during your travels.

You probably spend more time either off the boat on excursions, dining in the large windowed dining are , in the salon or top deck.

The cabin much less day use - of course sleeping at bnight but then it is dark and your passing scene views are linmited.

Examples of docking in ports -

In Austria -

Vienna -

boats dock with left or port side to the dock. Bow od the boat facing upstream in every place.

Melk - the same as above.

In Durnstein - they dock with right or starboard side to the dock. This varied docking ill be found throughout the trip .

The scenery in the Wacau area of Austria is best seen to the right doing upstream - most passengers tend to vies scenery when cruising from the top open deck so cabin choice is immaterial.

April is traditionally not a month of low water- much snow melting in higher elevations brings much higher water levels. Should have no worries about this.

The past few months have been very dry , the river has a few low levels in parts of germany now - not the usual thing.

I would advise you to purchase travel insurance when traveling outside the USA. A lot of medical plans do not cover travel abroad. We purchased our own travel insurance when we did a Uniworld Cruise in 2008. We spent extra time in Venice and Amsterdam that would not have been covered by their policy. Also, we booked our own flights. You probably can get a better price online. Just google travel insurance. But if you are going to have them do your flights and don%26#39;t plan to spend extra time, you may want to purchase their insurance to eliminate the hassle.

I googled travel insurance and there are a lot of different companies who sell the policies and in checking the reviews and I find they are all over the place.

Do you remember who you purchased your travel insurance from?

Does anyone have recommendations for travel insurance?
