Day Trip with Tour group - some free time...

On a tour group, arriving in Salzburg. Local Guide will take us through the historical center. Mirabell Gardens, the Great Festival Hall, St Peter%26#39;s Churchyard, Domplatz, and Mozart%26#39;s Birthplace. Have optional excursion to Berchtesgaden with a Visit to Eagles nest along the private scenic road entering through the original tunnel and elevator returning via the Durnberg-Hallein salt mine area.

Should we book the excursion or is there something else we should do with that free time?

Thanks!

If you%26#39;re interested in seeing the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle%26#39;s Nest) then it would be a good trip to do as you%26#39;ll see some nice scenery along the way. Alternatively you could catch the bus (No. 840) to Berchtesgaden and then a few miles down the road is Konigsee lake which is beautiful.

Another side trip would be to catch the bus to St Gilgen (no. 150 from Mirabelplatz). St Gilgen is at the head of Lake Wolfgang and is very pretty. You could take the cable car from there to the top of the Zwolferhorn mountain. The views are amazing.

You don%26#39;t say when you will be traveling but, if the fountains are operational, I would go to Hellbrunn and take the tour of the trick fountains. Truly unique and very entertaining. It%26#39;s very easy to get to on Bus #25. Your tour guide or the hotel concierage should be able to point you to the bus stop which runs along the edge of the old center of the town. Which hotel are you staying at?

You can also take the funicular up to the fortress and enjoy the views over Salzburg.

Go into St. Peter%26#39;s Church and/or into the Cathredral (Dom).

Here%26#39;s a link to what I did in one day:

The town is truly unique and we just enjoyed walking the streets and soaking up the ambiance.

Thanks for your suggestions. Traveling now. How long are these various suggestions? Are the trick fountains operating now? Not staying at a hotel. We are passing through.

The Hellbrunn Palace is about 20 or 30 minutes from the old town. The fountain tour takes 45 -60 minutes and you can also walk through the palace.

Here%26#39;s the link:

An audio guide for the palace comes with the entry fee. Some people are disappointed with the interior of the palace since there%26#39;s hardly any furniture but the audio guide explains the role of the prince archbishop who built the palace, its use, etc.

The funicular is very near St. Peter%26#39;s cemetery. Ask your guide to point it out when you are in the cemetery or look for the signs.

St. Peter%26#39;s Church is right by the cemetery and the Cathedral is right on the Domplatz.
