Christmas experience in the snow

Hi All

Really need some locals help and suggestions. My partner is from Melbourne and we will be back in the UK with my parents at Christmas time and would really like to take her to the snow for what i would call a %26quot;real%26quot; Christmas experience for 2 days (1 night). Somewhere there is snow on streets, pretty lights and decorations and a real Christmassy feel.

We are both pretty adventurous 34 and 31 so all suggestions welcome. Doesnt have to be a major city destination just with snow and fantastic lights etc.

Hope that all makes sense. Budget isnt really an issue.

Thanks in advance.

snowfall can be a bit hit and miss over christmas so I couldn%26#39;t really advise you where to choose. Higher altitude ski resorts would have the snow but not so much of the %26quot;christmassy town%26quot; feeling you might be looking for. Also it would be nigh on impossible to get a 1 night booking over the xmas period. Poster %26quot;Vertical%26quot; from Vienna will be able to give you a good idea what it%26#39;s like in Vienna and may have some good recommendations for you.

The only thing I would say is you might have to leave it to last minute to see where the snow is.

As mentioned it%26#39;s difficult to predict whether they%26#39;ll be snow or not at Christmas lower down.

If there is snow into Austria it%26#39;s also is dependent on where the weather front is coming from as this dictates where the snow will most likely deposit itself.

Maybe you should fly into Innsbruck which should give you a fair chance of going where the snow is be it in Austria, Switzerland or Italy.

We%26#39;re all hoping this December is like last year. Snow was everywhere and it even dumped on Christmas Day!

Giftzwerg properly advises the problem of finding a room for one day in most nice resorts as this is a %26quot; High Season %26quot; and most all good places want extended bookings.

While Vienna offers fine atmosphere during this Holiday, it will probably not produce a snow covered experienced and for that reason would not recommend it if this is a priority for you.

Perhaps Seefeld just north of Innsbruck is a good place to consider.

The center of the village is a pedestrian zone. Very nice decorations - the center square with the Church nearby , horse drawn sleighs waiting for customers and some nice hotels.

Seefeld sits on a high plateau and has several ski lifts to take you to higher altitudes for more snow too.

Nice ice skating rinks in the town center add to the experience.

This town is a mecca for cross country skiers and normally has satisfactory snow for this directly from the town.

If rooms are not available there, you should be able to find something for 1 night in Innsbruck.

Seefeld less than a 30 minute scenic train ride away.

St. Gilgen is another wonderful option. Check out Gasthof Zur Post.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. Will have to start researching the areas people have suggested. Seefeld sounds familiar, i think i went there with the family about 18 years ago... Went in eth summer and did lots of walking, beautiful place.

Perhaps you remember the beautiful and frequently photographed Curch in Seefeld. In my opinion this town is more attractive in winter compared to summer.

If you enjoyed your prior visit, consider going again- nice winter atmosphere.
