Hi I have just booked a last minute holiday to Kirchberg and I want to go mountain walking next week.
Just want to know will the mountain huts be open or is it off season. To late for walking. To early for sking.

It might be too late but I%26#39;m sure the tourism board can help you with this question!

Everything is more or less closed now. The only lift running is the Hahnenkammbahn which is due to close the end of this week (26.10) as is the Hochkitz restaurant. Many of the Huetten are already closed. There are some that are open until the end of October
Bochumerhuette

start by the Gasthof Hechenmoos on the Pass Thurn strasse between Aurach and Jochberg
The brechhornhaus in Westendorf might be still open until the end of the month

or a more comprehensive list of possiblities

Thankyou both for the replys.
I will be walking up (and down)
I will just have to take some food/drink with me ;-(
Can anybody tell me if I will be able to walk up GroBer Rettenstein.
Only bothered about snow. As I walk in trainers I dont really want to do it if it%26#39;s got a lot of snow on top.

I%26#39;d be less worried about snow and more worried about it turning into a quagmire. The weather is due to warm up over the next week with rainfall. I would suggest you need a pair of walking boots. Trainers are ok in the summer/after long periods of dry weather where the pathways become hard but this time last year I was walking in although dry weather conditions the ground was in some places like a marsh.
Whenever the weather is damp/wet I always wear Mountaineering boots rather than softer walking boots. I find the more rigid sole and tread pattern gives more grip. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend walking up the Grosser Rettenstein this time of year in any other type of footwear. The rocks will be very slippery under foot especially on the last part to the summit

This is the wrong time to walk in trainers and just the wrong time to walk in the mountains.
Not just possible snow on the ground or having a quick storm appear and you not familiar with terrain or trails. It appaers you do this alone - not a good idea.
The frequent rain , snow and freezing weather loosens rocks making it less safe on the pathways . But perhaps even more dangerous can be the loosened rocks that can fall.
The few places open probably close after the 26th October , a National Holiday here .
Too soon for winter sports generally, too late for summer.
I would suggest some other activities
