Weather for Driving in Upper and Lower Austria

I posted a message earlier about car rentals as we are planning to drive from Salzburg to Venice November 3, 4, 5th. The responses were very helpful and we were just about to book our car. On reading a number of the tourist attractions, however, it seems that many don%26#39;t operate after mid-October, and there are suggestions to check weather conditions before planning a trip into the mountains. We are now wondering if we might find that it is snowy and icy driving, and driving might be on smaller, windy roads. We don%26#39;t know the terrain and are still trying to figure out the best places to stop as we have two nights between Salzburg and Vienna. We were thinking of going via Halstadt and maybe Krems or Melk. Would driving conditions be OK in that area, or would we be better off taking the train.

Many thanks.

While ir is too soon to have good weather predictions for those dates, generally in lower elevations you have no real worries about heavy snow. during this time.

The drive Salzburg to Hallstatt is relatively flat at lower altitudes. The highways like the#158 and #145 are relatively wide 2 lane roads often near to lakes that moderate temperatures.

You will probably take the Autobahn -A-1 for part of the trip to Vienna - no trouble .

The nice road along the Danube Melk - Krems - no trouble as again the Danube moderates temps. this is flat and lower altitude

This rarely gets any measureable snow at any time of the year. or if it happens very little.

Lower Austria is Niederosterreich

Upper Austria is Oberosterreich.

Driving to Venice depends on your route the main autibahns should be no trouble - these are not winding radways and moferate inclines.

Things close now dur to lack of tourists not necessarily bad weather.

You will see more in the Lake District and Danube areas by auto.

St. Gilgen makes a good central location in the lake area - short rides to Monsee, Hallstatt, etc.

Emmersdorf just across the river from Melk is an alternative .

The Post hotel in Melk is probably open and has an OK kitchen.

Be certain the rental auto has a vignette - highway use tax sticker- this on windshield- also snow tires .

Thank you very much - that makes us feel a lot more comfortable and I would never have know to check for the vignette so thanks.
