Salzburg in One Day?

Hello! I am in the planning stage of a trip that will include Paris and Vienna. Time is limited to 2 and half days in Paris, and 3 and half days in Vienna (plus travel days). I am hoping to use one of the days in Vienna for a side trip to Salzburg, by train. Just wandering, if I start early in the morning, will it be worth the day to go to Salzburg? I would like to see the Mirabelle Palace and Gardens, take a ride to Untersberg, and if I can squeeze one more site, possibly a castle. I understand trains to Vienna run until late in the evening.

Could anyone chime in with your opinion on this day itinerary? We are planning this trip sometime in April 2010. Thank you. :)

Yes, you can see and do a lot in Salzburg in one day since the city is very compact and the transportation system can get you to the main sights easily.

Here%26#39;s a link to the report that I wrote about what I did in one day in Salzburg. It includes the sights you mentioned.

How are you travelling from Paris to Vienna??????

If you are taking a train or even driving, you%26#39;ll go right through Salzburg. So, you could stop there for a night and not backtrack. That would save you a three-hour train trip in each direction (Vienna-Salzburg-Vienna).

We decided to fly into Vienna from Paris to save time. The train trip is about 12 hours long and involves a couple of transfers, so it would not work within our limited time. Flying is our best option this time. Thanks for the suggestion!

Glad to know our plan is doable. Thanks for posting your trip report!
