which one?

Hi,

We will be in Salzburg in December and we are between two hotels for our accomodation. The first one is Mercure in Bayerhamerstrasse 14 a and the other one is the second Mercure hotel in Sterneckstrasse 20. Which one has a better location to go to the center of the city? We use the public transport, but we prefer to go anywhere in the city on foot.

Also, what about the area of each hotel? Are safe for a young couple?

Thanks in advance.

I would not suggest either actually. Locations are not the best.

Check out Hotel Weisse Taub and Hotel Am Dom for budget friendly in the city. Hotel Stadtkrug is worth a check also.

The areas are safe but I wouldn%26#39;t recommend staying there either. caviargal has made some excellent suggestions. A friend of mine stayed at the Mercure on Stermeckstrasse. It%26#39;s a big, busy road with loads of businesses on it. Awful place. Sorry. Bayerhamerstrasse is even further away and a much worse area. I truly wouldn%26#39;t go to either. You wouldn%26#39;t find it an easy walk to the old town from these hotels.

Thanks so much for your replies, but i can say that i am very disappointed from you answers. We are between these two hotels, because i am an Accor card holder and prefer to stay at hotels of this chain. As i know there is also an Ibis and an Etap hotel, but they are out of the city. So, what is wrong with these hotels (Mercure)? The distance (15-20 minutes to the old town), is not a big problem for us. If it%26#39;s so cold then we will take a taxi. Really, are the taxis expensive for this distance?

Also, do you know if the distance from the train station is a ten minute walk as i have read and if there is a bus/tram stop near these hotels?

Thanks again.

These answers are honest based on personal experience - sorry you do not like them.

I, too, am an Accor card holder but would not stay in either hotel.

Hello,

the whole of Salzburg is served well by buses so that wouldn%26#39;t be a problem. Both hotels are on busy streets in a industrial/commercial part of town. Nothing attractive to see around these hotels and the roads will be noisy. I think the Sterneckstrasse one would be the most noisy. Both caviargal and I are familiar with the city and know that there are so many nicer places to stay. In December the Christmas markets will be in full swing and you will naturally want to be in the old town. Both these hotels are a bit of a trek from the old town (my friend who stayed at the one on Sterneckstrasse was SO disappointed with its location and found she was forever trudging back and forth or having to take the bus) so you%26#39;ll spend some time on buses or in taxis. You can walk from both hotels if you wanted but it would take a while.

I%26#39;m sure caviargal will agree with me that Salzburg is a beautiful town with very many great hotels to stay in. When we see someone make a choice which we think is not a good one we have to be honest and say so. We like to think we%26#39;ve given good advice and always hope travellers have the best experience of the city that they can.

Locationwise there isn%26#39;t much to choose between them regarding their distance from the old town so I suggest,if you really want to stay at one of these two hotels, you read the reviews on this site for both hotels and book the one you like the best.

Liz.

Liz, very well said and I completely agree! As a huge fan of Salzburg, I would find it much less enjoyable when staying in such an inconvenient location that lacks the charm and appeal of so much of the city.

I have been visiting Salzburg since I was an exchange student there in the mid 70s and it is one of my favorite cities in Europe. There are many reasonable and charming options for accommodation in all price ranges.
