Christmas 2009 travel

We (myself, husband and 5 year old daughter) will be travelling from a holiday in Garmisch, Germany and plan to arrive in Vienna on Christmas Eve. I%26#39;ve found a lot of information about the various Christmas markets in Vienna but am wondering what else will be open for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the day after Christmas?

I also found information about a performance of the Nutcracker on Christmas Day but am confused about buying the tickets. The opera house website (staatsoper.at) has a space for the desired price per single seat and the accepted price per single seat? Also, any recommendations on whether or not this is a child friendly performance?

Any recommendations for sights that appeal to children?

Any family friendly hotels??

Thanks!

Hi!

We´ve had a few threads about Christmas lately, if you´d like to use the search option - as such, the Vienna Tourist Board uploads information on eating out and sights that are open on their website a little close to date; go to www.wien.info/en from mid-October for that.

Shops close around 2 p.m. on December 24, banks and post offices are closed all day - and everything is closed on December 25 and 26 here. Many museums/sights are open on the 24th and most on the 25th and 26th (early closing on December 24, often). House of Music is usually the one with the longest opening hours on December 24 - until 8 p.m. Many cafes and restaurants close in the early afternoon on December 24, those places open for dinner mostly offer a set menu and come with reservations, but as such, you´ll be fine in the city centre when it comes to choice.

Follow this link for suggestions for families www.wien.info/en/vienna-for/families .

The Vienna Tourist Office usually posts a listing of open restaurants and tourist sights in time for you to review and make decisions.

But enouh restaurants are open that you do not row hungry Christmas Eve. Reservations for Christmas Eve would be ood.

You should know that the major celebration of this Holiday is made on Christmas Eve , the 24th.

Often a festive family and friends dinner with presents opened and many sing Silent Night by tradition. Thus most places close ealy on the 24th to alllow workers to be home and prepare for festivities.

%26quot;5 and 26th of course still Holidays and many make visits, walk in the parks with family and just enjoy these days.

More are open on the 25th.

Most major tourist sights are open on the 25th and 26th.

Look to this site

www.khm.at

under opening times I think you will find a list of openings , closings and hours for many places.

The Schonbrunn Christmas market is open on Christmas Day and makes for a nice festive visit.

The State Opera does not offer these tickets for sale yet.

You probably refer to the %26quot; Stand By %26quot; order .

An explanation of the stand by system and general ticket sales will be found on the website.

The Nutcracker is a standard presentation of the State Opera lasting 2 hours with 1 intermission.

While not a child aimed performance- depending on age and interests of the child , it may be OK.
