Hello,
My self an my wife visiting friends in Innsbruck and then moving on to Salzburg this weekend? Going to hire a car at Memmingen airport - would anyone have any idea how far/long it would take to get to Innsbruck from the airport and from Salzburg back to the airport? bit nervous for flight times etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Memmingen - Innsbruck is about a 2 hour drive depending on traffic.
Salzburg - Innsbruck is also about 2 hours.
This depends on the route you choose somewhat. part of the way can be on 2 lane highways - Slow truck traffic can cause delays as some places can be hard to pass due to curves etc.
I would look on Via Michelin
this site can provide good information and what they term the quickest way

Memmingen - Innsbruck: It is about 320km, on the following route: Autobahn A-7 Memmingen to Fuessen (about 100km); Fuessen via Austrian Route 179 to Austrian Autobahn A-12 (61km) ; A-12 to Innsbruck (42km)
Figure on averaging about 120km/h on the autobahns, 8km/h on other roads.
For the A-12 and the trip to Salzburg you will need an Austrian Autobahn user%26#39;s windshield sticker, called a vignette. Last time I used one, it was about EUR8 for 10 days. You have to get it BEFORE you enter the autobahn. Any gas station in Germany near the border and in Austria will sell it.
The fast way from Innsbruck to Salzburg is taking the A-12 east past the German border to where it intersects with the A-8 coming from Munich (120km) It will take you east to the German/Austrian border and to Salzburg. (72km)
Returning to Memmingen from Salzburg: A-8 west to the Munich by-pass Autobahn A-99 (119km). By-pass to Autobahn A-96 (you want to start going on the by-pass by following the direction to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, however, the A-96 is PAST the Garmisch exit from the A-99. I have never figured out the exact road distance on the A-99 to the A-96, but it is about 20km.
A-96 to Memmingen 93km.

Check carefully -
I believe the above calculations regarding distance not really accurate
Example
Memmingen -Innsbruck is a little less than 200 kilometers.
That advice given above
100+61+42 does not equal 320 km. for example.
Routes provided are ok -
Via Michelin can probably provide something better for you.

Just to throw my two-penny-worth in aswell :-) If you didn%26#39;t want to do the whole journey on the Autobahn you can take the B171 from Innsbruck as far as Worgl then turn right onto the B178 to St Johann in Tyrol, Lofer and Bad Reichenhall. There is some wonderful scenery taking this route. From Bad Reichenhall to Salzburg you can do the last ten minutes on the autobahn.

Depends when your flight is
On a good day Salzburg to Memmingen should take under 3hours (A8 to Munich - A99 Anticlockwise - A96 Lindauer Autobahn.
Although shorter via the A995 from Munich South I would avoid this route at peak times (e.g rush hour Mon-Fri)
In general Mon-Friday:
Problem areas in Germany are between Irschenberg and Munich South (Junction of the A99/A8 Salzburger Autobahn) - Mornings there can be traffic problems - accentuated if there is a lot of Lorry traffic as they slow down for the hils at Irschenberg/Weyarn - as well as slower moving traffic on the A99 south to North. A99 West from Munich North (junction of the A99 and A9 Nürnberg) to A8/A96 Stuttgarter /Lindauer Autobahn problems at peak times/rush hour (especially Mornings and less so but still a problem late afternoon/evenings)
If you are driving around Munich between 11am and 3pm during the Week you shouldn%26#39;t have much problem with traffic. Weekends can be unpredictable but in general ok.
