Innsbruck vs Salzburg

Is there enough difference to warrant a stay in both? We had planned on a day trip to Salzburg mainly for the SOM tour. But may be reconsidering staying over another day. If we did that...is there enough in Innsbruck to make another stop there worthwhile or should we chug on to Switzerland? Luzern would probably be our next choice then Interlakken and Lake Geneva before leaving from Zurich.

Thanks in advance!

Much depends on information you do not provide

time of year for the visit

time you have available

method of travel - train auto

Day trip to Salzburg - where will you be staying ?

Your interests ?

The sightseeing in then old town Innsbruck can be accomplished in less than a day.

For many winter is the nicer time to visit Innsbruck with all the winter sports available close by.

Depending on the time of visits-

ski jumping competition, bob sled run, nordic combined and cross country skiing competitions.

Salzburg city can be seen in a day or two. But many prefer a longer visit for such things as SOM zour- added time in the bnearby lake region.

If time is a factor, Salzburg is the better choice for overall experience in my opinion.

if you are passing directly by Innsbruck and have sufficient sightseeing time , then visit.

We have just returned from 5 weeks travelling through Switzerland and Austria, and spent 3 nights each in Innsbruck and Salzburg during the trip. As far as we were concerned, Innsbruck wins hands down - we LOVED it. We stayed in the centre of the Old Town and spent a lot of time walking around there, visiting various sights, walking along the river etc, as well as visiting the Alpenzoo and taking the cablecar to the top of the mountain above Innsbruck. There were always quite a few tourists around, but we never felt crowded or rushed, and we found Innsbruck a very welcoming, enjoyable place.

We found Salzburg (especially the Old Town area) to be absolutely packed with tourists, you could hardly move, and everything seemed geared towards the tourist dollar - on reflection, we would have preferred to spend more time in Innsbruck. The best day we had in Salzburg was going out to Schloss Hellbrun (the trick fountain tour is great fun) and spending a few hours at the Salzburg Zoo. Both places were much less crowded and we had a much better day out there than the time spent in Salzburg itself.
