Need help for picking which operas to attend from this list!

Hi,

My gf and I are going to be in Vienna from 9-30 to 10-2. There are so many operas and we just don%26#39;t know which one to pick.

There are the following operas according to the wien info website.

Ariadne auf Naxos (volksoper)

Das Traumfresserchen (State opera house)

Die Zauberflöte (volksoper)

Don Carlo (State opera house)

Pique Dame (State opera house)

1. Which section/price of tickets should I purchase to get a decent view and fair price? We do not want to spend too much for the concerts.

2. Is the venue%26#39;s website the best place to order ticket? When will they be available for online purchase prior to the start of the show?

3. Should I pick Staatsoper or Volksoper or should I pick based on the opera instead?

Thanks!

First drop the Traumfresserchen from your list . It is a childrens offering in a special small theater at the Opera.

Whichever you pick - order direct from the website for each venue

www.volksoper.at

www.staatsoper.at

Instructions for tickets , seating plan, pricing is all available there.

September ticket available now -for October either now or by September 1.

The State Opera is one of the premiere Opera houses of the world.

Avoid tickets with obstructed views.

This makes for a nice but relatively expensive evening even with lesser tickets.

Opera buffs may wish to see a performance- a casual visitor must weigh price versus experience.

Only you can decide this.

The Volksoper ( Peoples Opera ) is still a nice venue not as elaborate but much cheaper tickets. Generally good views and acoustics.

The venue depends on what you look for or wish as an evening.

I would not recommend Ariadne or Pique Dame.

Mozarts Zauberflötte ( magic Flute ) or Don Carlo better choices in my opinion.

To me -he evening of Mozart magic Flute offers best value in my opinion.

Middle priced tickets toward the rear of the parkett or middle Balkon are good.

The soloist Elisabeth Flechl for this Opera is well regarded joining the Volksoper several years ago and featured in numerous performances.

If you wish to see the State Opera tours are offered regularly . You can check the website.

Standing room tickets are available 80 minutes before each erformance if you wish a visit too. very cheap stay as long or a little as you wish , so not much lost.

In addition , on October 2, the performance will be shown live on a giant screen just outside the Opera House.

Good Luck . More questions just return here.

agree with Magic Flute, especially if you are not %26#39;regular%26#39; opera attendees.

Whichever you choose though, I suggest you google a synopsis and read it before attending - it will enhance your evening.

The Program that is available for any performance at the State Opera or Volksoper will have a synopsis of the offering in various languages including english.

This normally is presented by the Act so it is very easy to read just before.

It also makes a nice souvenir of the evening. These available from the usher for a few euro. Many performances have english subtitles placed on a convenient screen either by your seat or above the stage.

While not a word for word translation it provides a good reflection of the performance.

We went to several operas while living in Vienna. Zauberfloete is a wonderful opera with lovely music, you will enjoy it. Volksoper isn%26#39;t quite as elaborate as the Staatsoper but still very nice.

My first choice would be Don Carlo at the Staatsoper.

Definitely try to read a synopsis or better yet, the libretto if you can find it in English. Also check your local library to see if they have a video performance of the opera before you attend - it will be so much more meaningful if you understand the story and have heard the music.

I think any of the seats in the middle part of the first balcony are quite good and will be less expensive than sitting on the floor. Up any higher and it gets a bit distant, also sometimes on the sides you can have a slightly obstructed view.

Enjoy - sounds like fun!
