Xmas day in Innsbruck ..what to do?????

Hello, I will be in Innsbruck on Christmas day, travelling from Salzburg. I am staying at the Hotel Weisse Kreutz in Old town. Just wondering what peoples suggestion were as we will only be in Innsbruck on this day. Is the Casino open??? Should we go skiing somewhere close by?? Will anything be open?? thanks-

The 25th of December is a nationwide public holiday on which all shops and a few restaurants are closed. People meet their beloved ones and step down for relaxation. Don%26#39;t expect much activity. The Casino seems to be open but I doubt that it is fun on that day. Skiing would be an option but you would not need to go to Innsbruck for that. Innsbruck has a lot to offer, so why not smoothly strolling through the city (eventually with a thick jacket depending on air temperature) and doing the usual stuff (oldtown, Hafelekar Outlook Point at 2.200m above sea level, sidetrip to Hall).

Your hotel is conveniently located in the %26quot; Old Town %26quot; area of the city. Excelent location for you to explore.

The hotel has a restaurant and many restaurants are nearby- these would probably be open to cater to tourists during this Holiday time.

Just down the pedestrian zone from your hotel is the famous Golden Roof. Every year a large Christmas tree is erected there , nicely decorated and lighted.

Often some music there too.

Close by are the Imperial palace( partly closed for renovation perhaps now more is open).

Visit the Churches in that area -St. Jacobs and also the Imperial Church.

This Church - Imperial is adorned with large metal figures of historical persons as a memorial to the King Maximilian and is old and very beautiful.

A museum nearby too.

Ambros Castle just outside of the city is open during this holiday period daily and is worth a visit.

The alpen zoo a fun visit also.

Many years you find few people skiing on this Holiday and it makes for a good time.

Nerby in Igls is the patscherkofel - this home to the Olmpic downhill run.

Easy to reach from downtown Innsbruck by public transport or ski bus.

Rentaly available there

I mention this area as it offers more skiable terrain at all levels than the neighbor area to the north accessable by the Nordbahn- many tourists find this area very steep and less enjoyable.

Walk the old city at night - most enjoyable with the lights.

The casino is not large - makes for a nice evening but nothing like you find in USA regarding size - relatively quiet atmosphere.

You can walk to this from your hotel in probably 10 minutes.

Thus enough choices to keep you busy whatever you choose.

NB 24.12 is %26#39;Christmas Day%26#39; in Austria as we might know it (meal, presents, etc.)
