Overnight in Krems or Durnstein?

We want to cruise the Danube from Melk to either Durnstein or Krems, and then disembark for an overnight before returning to Melk by the next morning ferry.

Will we miss a most beautiful section if we overnight in Durnstein as opposed to Krems? Or is the section between Melk and Durnstein the most scenic?

For the overnight, we need lodgings close to the ferry docks as we will be walking with luggage. Any suggestions as to the best way to do this trip?

Trip date is 10/22 to 10/23.

All comments welcome with advance thanks.

Look to your similar question recently posted as I placed some info there.

The most scenic portion of the trip Melk - Krems is that area Melk- Durnstein.

Durnstein- Krems is just 7 +- kilometers ( 4 +- ) miles so you miss little by debarking in Durnstein.

The boat dock for Krems is actually in Krems- Stein a western portion of the city - about 3 kilometers from the center.

No hotels close walking distance from the dock.

In Durnstein you have several hotel options-

look at the Sanger Blondel.

check when they close as most will only be open someplace close to the end of October.

This hotel is a short walk up hill slightly from the boat dock.

perhaps 5 minutes.

Do not take the walkway immediately in front of the Durnstein Boat dock up to the village.

Instead as you leave the boat , turn right and walk a short distance along the promenede. perhpas 75 meters - just past a rock outdrop will be a stone walkway up along the Church Durnstein.

At the top of this walkway , turn right and you find the Blondel.

Across from the Blondel is the Richard Lionhearted Hotel- so a choice.

We loved Dürnstein! Try to stay in the room with the balcony at the Hotel Sänger Blondel. Fab view of the castle ruins up the hill and the monastery/stift next door. We visited three years ago and still rate it as one of our top hotel views.

The remaining section between Dürnstein and Krems is not a %26quot;must%26quot;. If you intended to visit Krems or feel that Dürnstein does not entertain you enough, you could easily do Krems by train. It only takes 15 minutes and the station in Krems is pretty close to the %26quot;oldtown%26quot;. Dürnstein is a gorgeous but pretty small village which can be seen in less hours.

Thanks to you all. Am researching lodgings in Durnstein.

I%26#39;ve already posted another question re transport from Melk to Salzburg after we return to Melk via the ferry. If you have any suggestions re the merits of train/bus/private driver, feel free to add them here.

All your expertise is invaluable and much appreciated.

For lodging in Durnstein

deluxe is Schloss Durnstein

expensive - some rooms with good danube views-pool

A nice dining terrace if weather allows.

Richard the Lionhearted

Some rooms with good river views - some renovated - some older I think - they have a small dining terreacr with river views - food OK

Sanger Blondel-

Best value in my opinion - veryy nice owners always watching over the hotel- speak english

nice dining garden if weather allows-

as mentioned some rooms with good views of the Blue Steeple of the Church and castle ruins.

Some pensions-

Stoger is one at the west end of town.

In my opinion Durnstein much nicer to stay in than Krems.Especially true with a short stay.

I thought your original posting was asking advice rerding travel via a rental auto- this has changed ?

Melk or Krems- Salzburg - no bus service

You may be able to arrange private driver - this would be expensive but convenient. A 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive or a little less. Train then is the best option but requires changes.

With the Durnstein - Melk train line now not operating due to rock slide- it is possible to take a transfer bus from Durnstein with a change to Melk- then train onward to Salzburg

or take the train Durnstein -krems then krems - St.Polten then a direct train to Salzburg.

Note that the St. Polten station is now being renovated. Some inconvenience can occur as some of the tracks have no lift to them and require some steep stairs to climb. Was just there the other day.

Hopefully the train arrives on the new tracks numbered 6 and 7 - these with a lift if needed.
