Hello, please don%26#39;t feel you have to stay near the train station. It%26#39;s not a nice part of town. Salzburg is a tiny city and the station can be reached quickly and easily wherever you are staying. The station is also a bit of a distance from the tourist sights so you%26#39;d have to take the bus each day. Have a look at these hotels which are in the old town and in nice locations:

Hotel Weisse Taube

Several posters have recommended against staying in the vicinity of the bahnhof. The area looked ok to me but nothing special. The Old Town is just a few minutes away by bus, so we looked there for lodging last year and definitely liked the location better. We liked the Best Western Hotel Elefant in the heart of the Old Town and would probably stay there again if we take the train, but there are others in the vicinity that also seemed good.

It is a 20-30 minute walk to the old town from the main station.

Crowne Plaza Pitter sometimes has very good rates as do the NH Hotels. All convenient and I personally like to stay on that side of town.

Hotel Stadtkrug is another well priced option.

The Radisson Hotel Alstadt is in the Old Town, right across from the Christmas in Salzburg shop. The hotel hallways remind me of an old monastery or a castle....very cool place

I%26#39;ve just come back.. we stayed at the Star Inn, it reminds me of an Ibis. It%26#39;s a decent hotel, no complaints. The location was good just a few minutes walk (through a tunnel) into the old town, rooms were clean, modern and decent sized, and breakfast was ok (it was included in our price) but I wouldn%26#39;t have paid €10 for it! It cost us €9 by taxi from the train station, alternativley there is a bus for €2 each.

We were in Salzburg for the first time ourselves a few weeks ago and had stayed in the %26quot;Old/historical town%26quot;. We agree with other TA posters that the distance from the Salzburg train station to the tourist sites, although not great, was also not that minimal and so would not allow for a quick stop back in your hotel room mid-day or a spontaneous stroll, etc. There are many hotels closer to the tourist sites that would allow to maximize your 2 days in Salzburg to enjoying the sites. We stayed at Hotel Goldene Ente and liked it a lot: simple but very clean rooms; very warm and hospitable reception; and smack in the middle of picturesque Salzburg!
