Right, hotels are booked :)
We need to get from Salzburg to Vienna on the 2nd and then from Vienna to Klagenfurt on the 6th.
We%26#39;ve looked at the trains and they seem quite pricey for 4 adults.
Can anyone advise on car hire in Austria? We would be looking for a car big enough for 4 adults so maybe a VW Golf or larger.
Are there any issues with a UK driving licence being used?
Cheers again!

No problems with a UK licence. There are many car hire firms in Vienna with representatives of all the major european/international companies. You may be influenced by whether there is an office that%26#39;s handy for your hotel. Also you need a company with somewhere convenient to drop off in Klagenfurt. The same thoughts may help you decide who to use from Salzburg to Vienna. If you want to book in advance you can use the UK websites of major groups like Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar. Or try a broker like Holiday Autos or Travelsupermarket or Kayak. If you intend to travel on Austrian motorways you need a special vignette, though a hire car should come with this.

Hi there, thanks for your kind reply, some great information there!
Just one thing confusing me though:
%26quot;If you intend to travel on Austrian motorways you need a special vignette%26quot;
Er... what does that mean?
Thanks again

Instead of charging tolls like in France, to use the Austrian motorways you need to buy a Vignette (a sort of pass) that you stick on the windscreen. But as I said, a hire car should have one already.

I know that taking the train is not really attractive for small groups although ÖBB grants a discount, which is basically not bad at all (in comparison to the regular singe fare). If you add the surcharges for oneway rental and the hassle that occurs when entering/leaving a busy city like Vienna, then train travel seems to be much more appealing in my opinion. I would frankly re-consider the idea of taking the train which would give you the most flexibility because the ticket can be purchased just before departure.

%26quot;If you add the surcharges for oneway rental... %26quot;
Eg europcar seldom has any oneway rental surcharges. Just do the math of renting the car for 2 oneway rentals (+petrol) and compare that with the railway tickets.
Both train and rental car have their own pros and cons.

Thanks for your input about the trains, how much does it cost for 4 adults to get from Salzburg to Vienna on the train?
