Hi does anyone know if smoking in public places still goes on in Austria. I know there has been talk of a ban but can anyone confirm or deny this. Thank you!

Yes it does still occur!

Thank you GCEK we had hoped that it would have been banned by now.... we love Austria, however we never really enjoy going into cafes and bars there because of the smoking, though the hotels we%26#39;ve stayed in do ban it from their dining rooms which is a good thing but hotel bars are especially bad!

The situation for nonsmokers is really bad in Austria... but no wonder as there are more smokers in Austria than in any other european country.
In theory, smoking is not allowed inside any building which can accessed by people. Only enclosed smoker%26#39;s rooms are allowed which have to be closed with a door. The same is valid for all kind of restaurants, bars, ... which are larger than 50 qm.
In reality smoking takes place in most restaurants and allmost all bars... if there is a nonsmoker room, it is the worst room of the restaurant/bar, even though this is not allowed by law.
Compared to all western countries, the situation for nonsmokers is the worst here in Austria and people (even nonsmokers) don%26#39;t think of it. Authorities don%26#39;t act... even after complaints.
I can just hope that there will be a EU smoking-ban soon, as I don%26#39;t trust austrian politicians any more.

It is really the only thing we dislike about Austria. We have learned to only book restaurants that offer non smoking areas as we both abhor cigarette smoke, especially when dining. I do wish they would make this change.
