Looking for ideas on where to stay the night between Wien and Salzburg 15/Oct (we are driving)
We leave Wien at around 5-6pm and while I know Salzburg is only 2.5 hours away I%26#39;m looking for somewhere special to stay the night (i.e something old world like, great view to wake up to, etc)
Any ideas ?
Cheers

If you are looking for a great view to wake up to, you might try Schlögen; it%26#39;s located on the Danube, where it curves back on itself. There is a small hotel with campground (just up the hill from the larger hotel), with rooms that look out onto the river. Gorgeous view on a busy stretch of the Danube (although it will require a bit of a detour north).
Have fun!

Thanks for the suggestion of %26quot;Schlögen%26quot;
I%26#39;ll keep it in mind but yes it%26#39;s a little north and out of our way.
At the moment I seem to be thinking around %26quot;Gmunden%26quot; (on the lake)
Anyone else have any suggestions ?
Cheers

Gmunden is an ideal place for an overnight.
It is just off the autobahn. Immediately on the lake - Traunsee and offers many hotel choices in all categories with comfort and style - some with goofd views of the lake and mountains.
From there, the next day you can easily follow the lake shore road throgh the area toward St. Gilgen and Wolfgangsee eventually finfing your way easily toward Salzburg. Or immediately back on the autobahn and quickly toward Salzburg.

Even St. Gilgen can be a good choice- this smaller than Gmunden directly on the Wolfgangsee and has some nice places too

Note if you drive on the A-1 autobahn- carefully watch the speed limits near the city of Linz.
They drop to 100 in this area rather than the 130 in most areas.
Also perhaps still some construction work for about 10 kilometers in the area of Regau-
2 narrow lanes of traffic each way, but the inner lane toward the traffic barrier is hard to drive and pass any traffic due to its size.
Hopefully this work is completed soon. But enough signs to warn you.
