Looking for some good one day trips

My mother %26amp; I plan to visit Salzburg for a week in March. Other than the Salt Mines and the Ice Cave, what are some good day trips? We will be using public transport and are looking beautiful small villages and spectacular scenery. Looking at some pictures...I don%26#39;t think that%26#39;ll be too hard! Is it possible to get to Hallstadt(sic?) using public trans? Thanks for your help!

Hello,

Eisriesenwelt ice caves do not open until 1 May so you wouldn%26#39;t be able to visit those in March.

We had a fantastic day out in Zell am See. It could not have been easier on the train from Salzburg. The scenery is stunning. It might still be the ski season in March with snowy landscapes to see. The train from Salzburg to Zell am See takes about an hour and a half. The scenery is wonderful all the way and at the lake even more so.

Hallstatt can be done by public transport but I think it takes a while and involves bus, train and ferry, but lots of people do this and love it. I would advise only going to Hallstatt on a clear day as the beauty is significantly diminished in cloudy weather which obscures the mountain views. Maybe another poster will be able to tell you more about getting there on public transport.

A very easy trip would be to Wolfgangsee. The bus from Salzburg takes only forty minutes to St Gilgen at the head of the lake. You can either stay on the bus and travel right round the lake to St Wolfgang or have a look round St Gilgen and then take the boat to St Wolfgang. The views from the boat are wonderful.

Liz, we fell in love with St. Gilgen last December. We%26#39;ll be back in the area during the market season this year and were looking at Zell am See as a day trip from Salzburg. Are they similar in charm, size, beauty, friendliness of the residents?

Hi caviargal,

Zell am See is very different to St Gilgen. The mountains around Zell are much higher and more dramatic. The lake is equally beautiful to Wolfgangsee and there are boat trips. A lovely hotel juts out into the lake at Zell which is a great place to have lunch.

I%26#39;ve never been to Zell in the winter. The town is bigger than St Gilgen but, although it actually has city status it%26#39;s really like a large village. The train takes you right into the town at the lakeside and it%26#39;s a short walk from the station into the heart of the village. As it%26#39;s a skiing region it might be geared up for that but not being a skier I don%26#39;t know if the advent period is when the skiing starts. I hope someone else can answer that for you.

We went on the cable car to the top of the Schmittenhohe mountain which stands behind Zell. The view from the cable car as we rose up the side of the mountain was one of the best sights I%26#39;ve ever seen in Austria.

People were just as friendly at Zell as they were in St Gilgen.

I think perhaps Zell caters for tourists who like outdoor activities more than St Gilgen which is very much on the %26quot;bus tour%26quot; route.

If you%26#39;d like to see some photos of Zell you could send me your email address in a private message.

Liz.
