Arriving in Vienna on the 29th Aug,picking up a car and setting off the following day for 10 days touring as much of Austria as possible.
After 10 days touring we have 2 nights in Vienna.
1 How can we best utilise the 10 days and see as much as possible?
2 Whats the best way to see as much of the city in one and a half days? Thinking maybe an organised bike tour?
Any advice will be really appreciated as we know very little about Austria.
Thanks
Lewis

What are your main interests? What places have you already contemplated? I would do some research in order to find out which places would match your preferences. It is hard to give advice with so less information.

Not great lovers of cities normally but we are talking about Europe not America. We like scenery, mountains, quaint villages etc.Walking and cycling.
Were thinking of starting off along the Danube to Krems?

With 10 days you have a great opportunity to see some of Austria.
Just one hour west of Vienna by auto is the area of the Wachau, along the Danube.
A chance to bike along the river throgh beautiful small villages like Durnstein, Spitz , vineyards.
Melk Abbey a must see.

good choice of restaurants , wine taverns ( heurigers ) to enjoy well priced food and wine.
easy to spend 2 days in this area.
Melk is very close to the east - west autobahn ( A- 1 )
After finishing your visits you can continue west in the direction of Salzburg.
Before salzburg you can leave the autobahn at Gmunden and proceed through the lake District
Traunsee, Wolfgangsee, Fuschlsee - many good places for an overnight and you should not need to reserve ahead.

The above places and hallstatt are favored by many tourists.
I find the region of Grundlsee, Aussersee, Toplitzsee much more conducive to better and quieter ties in the mountains with great sights and nice accomodations

Onward to the city of Salzburg- enjoy the city sights including the fortress, palaces, Churches,
this no place for an auto - park it and enjoy walking thriugh the old city portion.
The Grossglockner High roadway offers a great view of the high alpine region this south of Salzburg and makes a great trip with fantastic views.
The above not a complete guide but some ideas for you to look at and see what may appeal to you

Some fantastic information, really what I was hoping for.I will check out the websites you have provided and I may well take the routes you have suggested as they seem to cover all the things we would like to see.
Do you live in Vienna? Any suggestions what to do when we return there for the last 2 nights?
Staying in the Hilton on the Danube.
Is it far from the sights?
Would you recommend one of the oganised bike tours or just get a roving bus pass?
Regards
