innsbruck->krimml falls->grossgockner rd->salzburg drive

Is this drive recommended in first week of October? How long will it take?

You want to do it all in one day?

It all depends of the weather... if the weather is bad you won%26#39;t enjoy it... if it is nice it will be a great experience. It will take the full day... don%26#39;t worry.

For driving times, the best is to use map24.com or viamichelin.com.

Beside the weather condtions it is also necessary to consider the daylight issue. Hence I would leave Innsbruck as early as possible (and if weather permits!). The areas you intend to visit are located on a relatively high altitude. Rain you may encounter down in the valley could turn into snow or sleet (although the beginning of October should be %26quot;safe%26quot; in that regard). I only wanted to point out that up in the mountains the situation can quickly worsen. Be also prepared that you need to pay a toll for using the Alpine Roads.

Dear Robbi

Thanks for your reply. I am planning to break it over two days and stay either at Krimml or Zell Am See. Would you recommend an accomodation (upto 150 Euros/night) at either location that is nice?

Thanks again!

Dear Mikey

Thanks for the headsup on the weather conditions I need to look out for. Would you recommend hiring snow chains? I am planning to do this on 6 Oct.

Also, how is the GPS coverage (would my Blackberry get EDGE or equivalent there so I can just track my movement/mapns on the handheld)?

Cheers

No snow chains needed! Just get informed about the weather before you leave. No idea about GPS. When you speak about EDGE, do you mean the data transmission method in GSM cell phone networks?

|||

yes by EDGE I mean high speed data connection availability on cell phone

thanks

EDGE is widely available in Austria but no idea whether it exists there. Coverage maps don%26#39;t show it explicitly. Moreover since we have 3G technology (HSDPA and HSUPA) in many areas, EDGE has become rather unimportant (but it is very useful in parts without 3G though). The mobile phone network THREE(3), which is a sole UMTS network, covers almost all areas of importance (to which the main roads belong). All others only provide GSM (GPRS or EDGE) in the Gerlos-Krimml Area but 3G again down in the valley. Does your phone support 3G networks (UMTS 2100 MHz)? Are you also aware of the costs occuring when using your phone abroad?

|||

my phone doesnt have 3G :(

phone usage costs are picked up by the company so not an issue really..guess will have to rely on GSM/EDGE availability

thanks again

|||

I think that the network A1 supposedly has the best EDGE coverage in Austria but as it is not a necessity (only a enhancement) you won%26#39;t find it everywhere.

Guys thanks for all the tips..I hired a convertible and did the Innsbruck -%26gt; Krimml -%26gt; Zell Am See trip on Day 1. The next day we did Grossglockner and drove back and on to Salzburg. The weather was fantastic all throughout and we could drive top down for about 80% of the way (it got a bit chilly at the top!). EDGE connectivity was available thru 80% of the trip. All and all a fantastic drive with beautiful views all around.
