Vienna to Dubrovnik by car

Two couples travelling together are wondering about the feasibility of hiring a car in Vienna and driving via Bled and Ijubljana (Slovenia)Split and Dubrovnik over a 9 day period. Any ideas, suggestions as to this plan. Trip planned for late April 2010

If you can find a rental agency that will allow you to bring a rental car into Croatia and Bosnia (I somehow doubt it), then go for it. It is a long journey - about 1000 km, and goes through some spectacular scenery if you take the coastal route. Don%26#39;t forget you will need a motorway sticker for Slovenia and Austria.

Parking in Dubrovnik is, I imagine, non-existent http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/SearchForums?scope=2%26amp;ff=1555%26amp;geo=295371%26amp;q=parking%26amp;sub-search.x=0%26amp;sub-search.y=0%26amp;sub-search=Click+to+search+forums%26amp;returnTo=__2F__ , but you would have to ask in the Croatia and Slovenia forums for more info.

Then you have got to drive it all the way back again to avoid paying crippling drop-off fees (if the agency allows it it would certainly be several hundred euros - enough to put you off, anyway)

Hope this helps!

Thanks It looks like it could be a very expensive exercise.

Hi Pam we had a similar problem we had 9 family members traveling in July and we spent 20 days in Croatia. So cost wise and logistics it was cheaper to fly Croatian air(approx $400 per pax peak) and then hire a van in Dubrovnik, finishing in Zagreb.

starting in Vienna we decided to fly( 1 hr flight ) to Dubrovnik, picked up a van thru Millenium car rentals- check rates on the net www.milenium-rent.com,these guys beat all prices-email the owner Jasmin he will look after you, we took the van all the way up the Adriatic thru to Split and into Zagreb/ Varazdin,Bled is a short trip from the capitol, a day trip.

if you only have 9 days -flying will give you extra time sitting on the beach.Highways are great and easy to navigate, there are tolls along the way you will need a few Kuna in change, you can drive the coast in a day with stop offs well worth it, Croatia is beautifull.
