As a first-tinme visitor to Vienna I would appreciate recommendations for reasonably priced hotels or pensions near this station as I will be catching an early train from there.

There are better areas to find a hotel. How early is the train as Vienna%26#39;s transport system is up and running very early indeed?

Just for info: Südbahnhof will be demolished starting mid December 2009 requiring a re-organisation of the entire railway traffic there. Trains in Southerly direction will then depart from Wien-Meidling Station. Currently, all Southbound trains stop at Wien-Meidling Station too. As wisely mentioned by Norman it is not necessary to look for an accommodation in the vicinity of the station just because public transportation starts early and the area isn%26#39;t that good. Moreover the selection is rather limited. It is not like in Rome where you find numerous hotels/pensions around the Central Station. But I bascially understand that you want to have it as simple as possible. The closest hotel to Südbahnhof seems to be the Prinz Eugen Hotel which is situated almost opposite.

Thank you, Norman and Mikey, for this helpful info.
Which better area(s) would you recommend for reasonably priced accommodation and good public transport links to the station.

I would recommend the Hotel am Schubertring.
This hotel is immediately on the Ringstrasse at Schwarzenbergplatz in the city center.
You can easily travel via the streetcar line D to this hotel in 4 stops 5 to 10 minutes. No transfers needed.

The D is found just across the street from the train station.
Obviously this is an easy return also and this line runs very frequently.
Iportant for you is the fact that the neighborhood of the hotel is much nicer with many restaurants and cafes nearby.
Many sightseeing things close by too.
Hotels near to the Sudbahnhof including one mentioned above are not that great, no real good chance of dining and only nearby sightseeing is the Belvedere Palace.

Well, somebody can easily dine/do sightseeing in the city center as it just a few minutes apart. I don%26#39;t see a problem doing the usual stuff and then getting back to the hotel. Most visitors stroll through the city and automatically encounter a lot of restaurants/cafes. No need to dine in the vicinity of the hotel in my opinion (though a wide selection is always a plus). Moreover I don%26#39;t think that the Schubertring is reasonably priced as requested by the OP.

If one compares pricing ,Prinz Eugen against the Schbertring example a single room -very little price difference. The Eugen is not in a great neighborhood and is not really a good hotelin my feeling. perhaps the prior poster has not been in it.
Schubertring is near many things, a safe and convenient neighborhood plus a good selection of restaurants within 3 minutes walk. Just walking along the Ringstrasse in the evening is a nice experience. The short ride to it is worth it.
Add all this togehter and the choice is easy.
Always nicer to stay in the center of things regardless of the city if at all possible only adds to the experience.
