Hi there,
my wife and I arrive into Vienna on Wed Sept 24 and are spending 2 nights there, we then plan to go by train to Salzburg on Fri Sep 26 and again 2 nights there before travelling to Verona.
I am seeking advice on best options regarding train travel from Vienna to Salzburg and then from Salzburg to Verona.
Is it possible to purchase a ticket from Vienna to Salzburg and then onto Verona or do we need to do each trip separately?
Can anyone advise on likely prices etc?
Thanking you for your help,

International trains to Italy run on a special tariff system (Global Price) as the italian railways Trenitalia want to make train travel as expensive and complicated as possible.
In Austria, tickets cost the same at any time. So you don%26#39;t save any money by buying in advance. Regular one-way tickets of more than 101 kilometres are valid for 6 days. Buy your ticket from the ticket window or ticket machine as online-printed tickets are only valid for 2 days. You can use any train within the 6 days.
The cheapest way Vienna-Salzburg-Verona:
1-Plus-Ticket (issued without asking, it gives a small discount on the 2nd passenger)
Vienna-Kufstein € 90,80
Globalprice Kufstein-Verona (only valid on the booked train, incl. seat reservation, not from the ticket machine)
€ 80
So the total cost is € 170,80 or € 85,40 per person.
There are usually two trains per hour from Vienna to Salzburg, better catch the faster OEC or ICE trains.
From Salzburg to Kufstein, trains run usually every 2 hours. It%26#39;s cheaper to change at Kufstein instead of Wörgl, Jenbach or Innsbruck. Changing time for the train to Italy is more than enough, best is to sit on a bench in front of the station.

Can I buy the ticket for both of above in Vienna HBF?
Thanks,

Sorry if my message was a bit complicated...
Tickets inside of Austria are flexible, valid on any train within 6 days. You can stop on your way as often as you want (for example stop at Salzburg).
The tickets for Kufstein/Wörgl/Jenbach/Innsbruck to Verona a bound to a specific train.
When travelling from Salzburg to Verona you need to change trains at: Kufstein or Wörgl or Jenbach or Innsbruck.
If possible (you can see this in the timetable) change at Kufstein as it some Euros cheaper than changing at Wörgl, Jenbach or Innsbruck.
From Salzburg to Verona on Sept. 28:
Salzburg dep. 8:56 train ICE 562
Innsbruck arr. 10:44
Innsbruck dep. 11:26 train IC 85

Verona arr. 23:01
So first of all you have to choose which train to take on Sept 28 to Italy.
If you take IC 85 from Innsbruck to Verona, then you have to buy:
One ticket for two adults from Vienna to Innsbruck for € 97,10.
One ticket for two adults from Innsbruck to Verona on IC 85 for € 80.
Total cost: € 177,10 for 2 adults.
If you take IC 87, IC 89, IC 83 or OEC 189 to Italy, then buy:
One ticket for two adults from Vienna to Kufstein for € 90,80.
One ticket for two adults from Kufstein to Verona on IC 87/IC 89/IC 83 or OEC 189 for € 80.

You can buy all tickets at Vienna from the ticket window. Between Vienna-Salzburg and Salzburg-Kufstein/Wörgl/Jenbach/Innsbruck you can take any train you like. Only the train to Italy has to be fixed and you have to catch the correct train from Salzburg to Kufstein/Wörgl/Jenbach/Innsbruck for getting the connecting train to Verona.
If this is still not clear, don%26#39;t hesitate to ask. It%26#39;s all a bit complicated... I know.

Many thanks for the very detailed reply. I%26#39;m planning a similar journey for November, so your information was very welcome.
Thanks again,

You%26#39;re welcome.
Mind that allmost all trains via Brenner-Pass to Italy don%26#39;t have a restaurant any more (the italian railways don%26#39;t really like international trains)... so bringt snacks and drinks as the trolley service is quite expensive.

Wow! Fantastic info. I am planning a trip in Italy July 2009 and want to take a train from Trento to Salzburg and then on to Vienna. This information is very helpful. I will be in Asiago for several days and Trento seems to be the bast place to get on towards Salzburg. Do you think that makes sense?
|||
Trento-Innsbruck-Salzburg-Vienna is definitely the most efficient route. This itinerary requires a transfer in Innsbruck.
Tip on rail fare:
Don%26#39;t buy (separate) tickets covering *Trento%26gt;Salzburg* and *Salzburg%26gt;Vienna*. Better buy Trento%26gt;Innsbruck and Innsbruck%26gt;Vienna upon arrival in Innsbruck. As you have a short layover, smoothly head for a vending machine or ticket counter and get the Austrian domestic ticket. The reason is:
It is allowed to interrupt a journey/itinerary as often as desired as long as the validity hasn%26#39;t expired and the distance is 101km or greater. You would benefit from a better %26quot;price per km%26quot; making the entire trip ~25€/adult cheaper. My calculated example assumes Innsbruck as origination point and not Trient as the international fare display is complicated.

Hi
Can anyone help with prices and tips on how to buy train tickets for an adult and an 18yr old to travel by train from Rome to Salzburg by overnight sleeper, then from Salzburg to either Verona, Padova or Venice by day?
Should I look at trenitalia or oebb?
I%26#39;d really appreciate the help!
Thanks

Train tickets shall be booked with the railway operator in whose network the journey commences. For Roma to Salzburg contact the Italian Operator FS (Trenitalia) for assistance. ÖBB could only issue a regular paper ticket which is more expensive/complicated than any online ticket. If FS can%26#39;t help you with the return trip, then visit ÖBB in order to book Salzburg%26gt;Italy.
