Normally snow in October is not very likely . But have a look to the webcams on the Seefeld website.

You will see some snow .- at least just now 13.10 morning

The past few days have been very cool with some precipatation.

At higher altides this forms as snow- as these cameras show - at least for this morning Tuesday - this should melt relatively quickly however.

I was in Tirol in the middle of September and found a little snow at higher altitudes at that time , quickly gone in a few days.

As the winter nears , you probably find more scenes like this but who knows when. In December certainly snow in the mountainds around Seefeld and often in the town also.

Its lovely to see snow on all the cams of Seefeld I have ,I just hope its not too early ,I dont get there untill January!!!

Such views put me in a good mood.

Many places have had snow recently at higher elevations. Those in Solden Otztal are really happy as their annual first World Cup Ski Race of the year comes in less than 2 weeks.

Our TV had scenes from that area last evening with the workers happily grooming the new snow.

can this be done in one day

I only have one day in Salzburg (late October) and would like to see as much as possible. Can I see Hellbrunn in the morning and then have time to see the fortress, st. peters church, cemetary and the salzberg cathedral in the afternoon. (and still have time for a pastry or three). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, you can

I suggest that you leave Hellbrun to the last. The other sites are virtually all within walking distance of each other.

Hellbrunn is 5km from the center of town, on the same side of the river. After seeing the sites of the town you then canr decide whether to go there by taxi. I%26#39;m not sure what the bus connections are.

Yes, Treplow is right, you can do these in a day. If you%26#39;re arriving by train you%26#39;ll find the bus station right outside the train station. If you wanted to go to Hellbrunn first you will need bus No. 25. Make sure you get on it going the right way and ask for Hellbrunn.

There is a lovely avenue (Hellbrunner Allee) along which you could walk back to the old town but if you%26#39;re short on time it would be advisable to take the bus or a taxi back. Ask for the old town and the driver will advise you where to get off. You can then spend a leisurely afternoon seeing the sights. They are all very close together so you can see most of the tourist attractions. Several buses go back to the train station or you could walk there, through Mirabelgarten, on your way back.

YES! You can do it! I did it all in one day in July. You can go online and get a description of the Salzburg card and see if it is worthwhile for you. Watch opening and closing times. I started with the cable car since it is opened the earliest and planned on visiting Mozart%26#39;s Residence last since it is opened until 8 pm in July. Summer opening times are longer.

Bus 25 will get you withing walking distance of the major sights.

Hotel Garni Strass

We are looking to book at the Hotel Garni Strass (Inghams) for June 2010. We will be on a halfboard basis - does anyone know if we have both breakfast and evening meal at the main Hotel. Also is there tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. Any other info would be appreciated.

there is a glass covered walk way from the garni strass to the hotel so if the breakfast is in the hotel you do not have to go out side they do have several other buildings along side and across the road so make sure that you book the correct house just google hotel garni strass and there is a picture on the web site this is a very big hotel on the main high street in mayrhofen with the gondler next to it

sorry got carried away with praising mayrhofen yes all meals are taken in the main hotel and last time i heard about the rooms they do not provide tea and coffeee making in room take a travel kettle the hotels dont think much of this but what they dont know wont hurt them i always take a kettle

Hi all,

Hoping to book a weeks break end of February, normally go looking for the sun but seen this advertised and have decided to go for it.

I know nothing about Austria so any general info would be of help, not really looking to ski just sight see and enjoy a new country.

What is temp like usually at the of Feb, what sort of clothes should we bring and it is expensive to eat and drink ?

Have you arranged accomodations yet ? I ask as many hotels offer half board , that being a good usually buffet breakfast and a multi course evening meal. Some even offer mid day snacks , soups etc.

This meal plan is usually a good bargain and less expensive than ala carte dining. Most importantly , you known your majority of food cost before your trip.

Most places will offer several different main course choices, so you are not confined to just one offer.

Wine by the bottle can often be expensive . Beer is not tat expensive .

Bottled water often less costly than non alcoholic drinks like a cola.

Food i and drink in mountain huts can be expensive . If you are budgeting , you may wish to avoid this.

Clothing - you are in a mountain area with snow, obviously cold.

You need good warm waterproof foot wear, a good warm outer jacket , hat , gloves.

Best to dress in layers as days in the sun outdoors can be relatively warm, but later or in areas without sun it can be quite cold.

Expect temperatures about freezing point during the day and below freezing in the evening.

Most accomdation dress is casual and relaxed.

While Alpbach is not listed you could look to Kufstein - not far away in the Inn Vally and the Patcherkofel mountain just above and south of Innsbruck.

This may assist a little.

If planning to spend time outdoors- fun for winter walks- taking mountain lifts for great views etc. plan on freezing temperatures and of course dress accordingly - good winter boots , gloves hats essential.

Sun glasses and a sun screen product important as many get a good sunburn without thinking about this.

Agree with above that most like is quite casual so no need for extra special clothing.

Things like sweaters vests, heavy shirts really are handy - these enable dressing in layers for comfort.

Often in February you see much sun and this can be quite warm if no wind exists in those sunny areas.

Infrequently you find a Foehn wind- this a very warm wind from the south that brings temperatures well above freezing.

Often this wind is followed by some snow.

Thank you both for your replies, the accomodation we are looking at is bed and breakfast did look at half board but a little bit pricey but probably works out the same in the long run.

Not looking to book ski package but if we wanted to try skiing can you hire equip and just try for the a day ?

Visit to Herrenchiemsee on the way to Salzburg

Hi Everyone,

Myself %26amp; 2 others are landing in Munich in 2 weeks %26amp; are heading right to Salzburg for 2 days. On the way I was hoping to stop at Herrenchiemsee for a few hours, but as we are traveling by train I%26#39;m not sure if this is doable. From what I understand you need to take a special Chiemsee train from the Prien train station to the pier to catch the boat to the island, but I read somewhere that the Chiemsee train ends at the end of Sept. Since that webpage wasn%26#39;t updated recently I wasn%26#39;t sure if that was the case %26amp; I couldn%26#39;t find any information elsewhere. The website said if the train wasn%26#39;t running than you needed to walk 30 minutes to the pier. As this is the beginning of our trip I don%26#39;t want to have to walk to the pier %26amp; we might decide to just head directly to Salzburg. Can someone clarify for me whether or not the special train to the pier has indeed shut down for the season and if there is another way to get the pier without walking? Thanks in advance!

The distance between the train station and the pier is approximately 1.65 km (= 1 mile) which should be walkable in any case (even after a long flight). The general question is whether sightseeing on the day of arrival makes sense at all. To get more detailed information I would place that questiom in the Bavaria Forum where Chiemsee DE rather expect them than in the Salzburg Forum.

You are correct that the connecting train does not run after the end of September.

The walk would take 30 minutes or so.

You have the issue of luggage and probable jet lag to contend with. Considerable walking to do and the weather is always an unknown.

It can be foggy in this area of the lake at times.

If wishing to make a visit you can do this more comfortably perhaps from Salzburg.

I visit Prien am Chiemsee every year, and I always tell posters here to visit Herrenchiemsee, because most people go right past Prien on their way to %26quot;somewhere%26quot;.

The walk from the main train station in Prien to the pier is about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace (I walk slowly, and it takes me 18 minutes for so).

I agree with the above poster about your trying to include a tour of Herrenchiesee on the day your fly into Munich. Why not stay over night in Prien and rest up and see then see the castle the next morning? Then you can take the short train ride to Salzburg in the mid-afternoon.

child care in Zell

Are there any options for childcare for our 2 years old son in Zell am See? We would like to go skiing for a week in February or March, and he is yet a bit too young for that.

Crystal has a nursery there - does anybody know whether it is available for non-Crystal customers? Have you had any experience with it?

skiing in Obertraun

Hi,

Me and my family are going to Obertraun in february. My kids are 13 an 10 years old. They have been doing some slalom before. Where are the best skiing areas for beginners to moderate experienced skiers?How far is it from Obertraun? Is it necessary to rent a car or are there trains/busses?

Oberttraun is probably not the best place to pick for a ski vacation if that is your proimary reason to visit.

You will find the Krippenstein for skiing very close by
