I%26#39;ll be asking a lot of questions because I%26#39;m going to Salzburg for the first time ever in March of 2010. I noticed that the Eagles Nest is closed until May. Is it still worth it to go to Berchtesgaden by public trans? So far our basic itinerary is 5-nights in Salzburg. 2-days for the city. 1-daytrip to Hallstatt. 1-daytrip to Zell am See. and the last daytrip was going to be to Berchtesgaden. Whaddya think? Any help would be much appreciated.

Berchtesgaden is very small and currently undergoing a lot of renovations and building work. We were there last week and counted four huge cranes in the centre of the village. Having said that it is a lovely little place and easy to reach from Salzburg on bus No. 840. You could combine it with a side trip down to Konigsee lake which is about another fifteen minutes away. At Konigsee you can take the little cable cars up to the top of the Jenner mountain. Here you will see the virtually same views as you see from the Eagle%26#39;s Nest which is on the next mountain :-) This would make a whole day trip worth it, I think. At the lakeside at Konigsee there are some very touristy shops but if you walk round the lake for a few minute to Echostuberl you can have a nice lunch or just some hot chocolate if you like.
I%26#39;m not sure of the bus number from Berchtesgaden to Konigsee but you could ask at the bus station.
