We are looking to go and see the christmas markets mid December with our 2 children aged 12 and 11. After several hours of looking on the internet , we have narrowed it down to either Salzburg or Innsbruck. Any advice which would be best? Secondly, i understand that the chance of snow is less than slim in either place ,my question is , is there any place we could travel too close buy where we couldsee snow ? I see on the Innsbruck website that they have a cable car that takes you up a mountain ,would snow be present ?

I would pick Salzburg as there is much more to see than in Innsbruck. I am not saying that Innsbruck would not be worthwhile but Salzburg is just Salzburg! The probability of snowfall down in the valley [Innsbruck] or in rather flat areas [Salzburg] is always a speculative matter. I would clarify options short before you arrive or upon arrival. It is basically possible to quickly reach higher located areas from both cities. Ex Innsbruck you can go up to the Hafelekar Station (www.nordpark.com) at 2.200m above sea level, while ex Salzburg you can go up Untersberg Mountain (ropeway base station in St. Leonhard).
