Ski resort with good accommodation close by

I need 3 days accommodation within easy reach of a good ski area and have started to look at Mayrhofen area. Availablility is restricted because I only need 3 nights and it is half term time for UK kids. Any ideas out ther for a good place to stay within easy reach of good skiing for intermediate level skiers. I am flying into Munich so am flexible as long it is within a 2 hour drive. Is it sensible to stay just off the main Autobahn routes and drive in daily to ski?

what dates exactly??? How many people??? what age??.

I manage in the winter to do day trips from Munich to Zillertal (Mayrhofen etc). Ellmau is even closer (no traffic Munich to Ellmau about 1hr 15mins, to Mayrhofen 1hr 40mins). I do manage however to get 3 nights in Ischgl during the UK February school half term and Easter holidays. I take my kids there regularly every year in winter school holidays. IMO probably the best ski resort area in Austria. Excellent lift system, mountain restaurants, ski into Switzerland (Samnaun) plus a run down to the duty free village. Village at 1300m (snow safe) with valey runs linking various parts of the village. Can be a little more expensive (beers, food, lift pass) but I think it is worth it.

When are your 3 days. If they are mid-week then there is no problem with traffic; however driving from Munich to Tirol on weekend mornings can sometimes be a nightmare.

Alternatively if you want to stay in the zillertal you would have access to Mayrhofen, Zell am Ziller, Kaltenbach/Hochfugen. Bear in mind that there is no valley runs directly back to Mayrhofen or Zell am Ziller

If you stay in Ischgl you could also drive to St Anton for a days skiing (approx 40mins)

If you don%26#39;t stay in a resort then you will also miss out on the apres-ski

While Ischgl is a very nice place it is more than 2 hours from Munich, with a ride from the area of landeck to the town on a relatively narrow 2 lane highway that can be clogged with traffic.

I have always enjoyed the Zillertal area and the many opportunities available there .

mayrhofen and the nearby villages of Hippach, Ramsau, Finkenberg and Lanersbach/ Tux offer accomodations at all price levels and from rooms, suites to very nice apartments.

mayrhofen/ Hippach Finkenberg and Lanersbach/ Tux are all connected via a great series of lifts and contrary to above have some runs( Talfahrt ) to the valley.

Very convenient lifts from town centers, ski storage available by the lofts, ski bus service and good selection of reatuarants , apreski and nightlife if you want it.

Look to the following for more info

Happy to advise on accomodations recommendation - dates and price range most helpful. many english guests in these towns -

I would not recommend staying near to the autobahn and then making a daily trip- valuable time is lost this way and often you wish to stay in a nice place near to all activities.

If at all possible - as recommended above , try to make your stay during weekdays or travel on days other than Saturday -Sunday.

Many times on the weekends - huge stalls occur on roadways south of Munich accessing ski resorts.

Many accomodations rent during this time Saturday to saturday or Sunday - thus a huge travel and transition on the weekends.

This no way to begin or end a fine holiday.

Thanks for the replies. Your contributions are helpful - looking for accommodation I feel as though I%26#39;m going round in circles! I need 3 nights arriving Monday 15 February checking out Thursday 18th Feb. Thsi willl give us 3 full days ski ( we arrive on monday into Munich and depart on Friday morning so will be returning to Munich for an overnight stay at the airport on Thursday night). A three bedded room would be best value for us, I can find places at €300 per night but I would rather commute in from a highway location than pay this! If I have to resort to this option is Kiefersfelden an option or is it too far away from a decent ski area?

I would not suggest staying out of the valleys with sking and then making a commute.

Have you checked the hotellocator on the marhofen website.

www.mayrhofen.at

just insert your dates -

I found numerous places available just making a quick look- all conveniently located in Mayrhofen.

Pension Geisler- 255 euro for 3 nights. an example-

Apartment magdelena is another possible place- just on the main street and a relatively short walk to the penken Lift.

Hotel / pension Maria Theresia another place-

This time frame is not just a UK vacation period but also a major time for winter vacations of Austrians too. It is considered high season and availablity goes quickly.

Also consider nearby - Hippach and Finkenberg - These villages are near to mayrhofen and connected to the major skiing areas by the Horbergbahn and Finkenberg lifts - so still convenient-

Onre place just in the center of Hippach is Hotel Post- short ski bus ride to the Horbergbahn.

Finkenberg

Hotel Neuhaus - nice place a short walk to the lifts - good food- owner still the chef I think.

Funnily enough I will be going away the same days. Not sure what type of accommodation you were looking for (Half board, B%26amp;B, Hotel Garni). As I have a similar 3-4night trip this time every year I expect roughly to pay about €70 for a Hotel Garni (Hotel offerring B%26amp;B and possibly some Wellness/Sauna and maybe a small bar). Normally 3 of us sometimes 4.

If you try to use the resorts automated booking system you can fall foul of the %26quot;Mindestaufenhaltsdauer%26quot; (minimum number of nights) which is built in to the search engines. Some of the smaller establishments only like to take 7 nights and therefore are fixed e.g. minimum 7 nights and others have a sliding scale based on how many days prior to arrival you are trying to book. I must admit I take the risk every year and wait until less than 21 days to go.

Contrary to the contrary above and as I previously stated if you are in Mayrhofen there are no valley runs back to the village from the main skiing area.

During the UK school half terms I always find resorts popular with the UK Tour operators to be busy compared to the week before and after (last year in ellmau/brixental lunchtimes were horrendous - we ended up eating after 2pm or just after 11am)

I wish that some posters would read the postings more closely.

For some , a ski run back to a particular village is not on the top of a priority list.

But having lived in the area of mayrhofen, having family there and often vistiting , I know that ski runs from mountain skiing areas back to the valley exist.

The Ahornbahn in Mayrhofen takes skiers up to the Ahorn skiing area.

This cable car/ Gondola is the biggest in Austria. Thus one may assume that the lift company had confidence that their huge investment was warranted by skier demand.

This area has ski schools , mountain huts, an ice hotel and a ski run from the mountain directly back to the town.

The sister area of the Penken is accessed from numerous locations including the high capacity gondola from the center of Mayrhofen and from nearby vllages of Lanersbach/ Tux, Finkenberg and Horbergbahn Hippach / Schwendau.

The Hippach and Lanersbach villages have ski runs down to them from the high mountain areas.

Finkenberg has an unmarked way too , not known to most but possible if one knows the way.

The Penken has the steepest ski run in Austria , the Harakari and a snowboard park, mountain huts apre ski, ski schools and ski depots also.

Add the nice towns with varied priced and good accomodations, many near lifts , good ski bus connection, and most find this area a nice place to vacation- a good place to look in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately as suspected all the places I found would only accept a week long stay in February (I phone 4 different guesthouses to check avialability) so I have decided tor stay in Kufstein or Kieferfelden and will drive the short distance to Soll and explore what seems to be a great area for intermediate pistes.
